Negotiate now or negotiate later?

Post by Holodigm » Tue Apr 12, 2016 9:54 pm

HI everyone.

I'm hoping for some thoughts on when I should approach USC to begin negotiation - while I'm not above repeated grovelling, negotiating only once just feels fair. I've got some offers that may or may not be competitive, but deposit deadlines are around the corner so I need to decide now-ish whether to act on them. COAs are based on schools' provided calcs, and stats are 170/3.67. Also, I'm a CA resident born and raised in TX, so I'm perfectly fine with either state.

USC - $105k, COA $150k, 4/17 deadline
U. Houston - Full Ride, COA $58k, 4/15 deadline
Loyola - $144k, COA ~$90k (guesstimate, COA not provided), 4/15 deadline
Santa Clara - $90, COA $135k, 4/15 deadline
Southwestern - Full Ride, COA $100k, 5/1 deadline

UT - accepted Thursday, waiting on scholarship offer, but deposit deadline is 4/28
Also waiting on UCLA (expecting acceptance), NYU, and Cornell (both expecting waitlist)

I definitely won't bother mentioning Santa Clara, I just included it for full disclosure's sake. I have little doubt Houston is my strongest offer, since as of a couple weeks ago they're now officially a T1 school, but I now have UT potentially hanging out there as well as (fingers crossed) whatever UCLA may offer. And since most of these are worthless after Friday, my question is this - should I hedge my bets and go with what I have now, or be patient and wait for the others? I value any feedback, even if it's to call me a moron.

Thanks in advance.
