For any of the military types out there...
I'm considering transferring my commission to the national guard or reserves following the completion of my active duty service. I'm fortunate in that I will have a percentage of the GI bill to work with, but I'm concerned about the overall cost of my education. As a result, the guard and the reserves are compelling options, but I'm hoping to get a better idea of A) What other kinds of education benefits can I receive through guard/reserves and B) How badly has the time commitment impacted your ability to study/do internships/summer employment etc. Any help in this matter would be tremendously appreciated.

i did 8 years in the guard and can say that the time commitment would be a major concern for me, of course it will depend a lot on your unit.having to go on AT during an internship over the summer or go in for a 4 day weekend during 1l exams, would for me be a big pain in the ass. i was eligible for a small (couple thousand) tuition waiver but never used it because i had gi bill entitlement. they had a program where they would forgive 50k worth of existing student loan debt in return for a 6 year commitment when i was in but i felt like it was a bad deal, really all you get is a couple hundred bucks a month and the ability to feel like you're still in the military. you should take my opinion with a grain of salt given that i really got to dislike being in towards the end of my service.BDMPKT wrote:For any of the military types out there...

Re: National Guard/Reserves while in LS
I appreciate it, and that's kind of what I was expecting. I've been pretty diligent in my homework on this and can't really find any benefit that makes it worth it. Did the math and the ~$8,000 or so (between tuition benefits and salary) just doesn't seem worth the potential impairment of my education and internship/job opportunities. Anyone know any wedding DJ companies looking to hire?
