Requesting more booty

Post by abcdefg1234567 » Tue Feb 09, 2016 1:08 pm

Please let me know if this is too forward, or how I can better ask for more booty.

Dear X,

Thank you very much for offering me admission to XXX Law School. The school's growing reputation, rare opportunities, and strong sense of community are what persuaded me to apply. I would be honored to study at such an esteemed university, and look forward to visiting the campus and talking with students and professors soon.

While I am proud to have been offered the XXX of $XX,XXX, I believe that the stipulations are far too rigid and am worried troubled that as much as 53% of students lost their conditional scholarships within the last 3 reported years.

In addition to the XXX Scholarship, I ask you to consider me for a YYY Scholarship. As stated on the financial aid website, I am indeed an “ethnic minority” with “financial need.” I understand that the third requirement of "professional promise" is, of course, an evaluation you would have to make, but I would be happy to explain my professional strengths and why I believe I am a strong candidate for additional scholarship in further detail.

Sincerely,

Here is what I advise you send that school

"Thank you for the opportunity to attend XXX. Unfortunately I have decided to withdraw my application for this cycle in the hopes of gaining some further professional experience. I will be applying again in a later cycle and hope that XXX falls again on my list of schools to consider."

Then retake the LSAT and don't actually reapply to this school.

But seriously. If a school has such a huge rate of lost scholarships (and if it's the same one as in your previous thread), I'd be wary of attending in the first place. If you have a fully already, it's tough to garner more money, since that would then be a stipend which some schools aren't very fond of giving. And it's going to take more than "I fit the physical criteria of the scholarship". Some descriptions of scholarships bar you from double-dipping. So you either get one or the other, not both. Do you have a stronger offer from another school that you can use as leverage, rather than just trying to basically solicit the extra money?

This is for a different school than my last thread. They are higher up in CA than the other school but no full ride. Also a pretty high GPA renew req. I don't want to play the whole "this school gave me that....what YOU gonna do" game. They are my top choice and I would rather not offend them by throwing competing offers in the mix.

gotcha. well the best way to get a scholarship bump is to have a competing offer. If the other scholarship didn't require a separate application, then I doubt they would reconsider you for it (if they have already gone through that process with your app). Saying "I would like to attend, but this other school gave me X which makes it more affordable" is better than saying "I think you messed up when looking at my application, I deserve this scholarship that you did not award me." I don't know of a way to get more money without a competing offer (unless you are only expecting a 1k/yr bump or something). Can't hurt to try though, I suppose.
