Need Access Non-Custodial Parent Form

Post by mist4bison » Thu Jan 14, 2016 2:41 pm

When I started filling out my Need Access form, I selected that my parents are divorced and that one is a non-custodial parent. Oddly enough, the form requires tax info and a lot of personal information for the non-custodial parent (required meaning that I can't submit the form without filling out the info). I have no idea any of this parent's information and have no way of obtaining it. Has anyone run into this? What did you do?

Also, do only certain schools require a Need Access Form? I could only find 5 law schools that I'm applying to.

Some schools don't require it and, for instance, NYU didn't allow access to add them to the list until a week or two after the opening date.

Ah, thanks.

For anyone that runs into this same issue, I emailed NeedAccess and you can input zeros or n/as and fill out a special circumstance box.

You'll also want to reach out to your school to see what their process for getting approval for special circumstances is. If I remember correctly from the financial aid session at Georgetown's open house, you have to have a signed letter from a third party (they have requirements for who can or can't serve this role that I don't remember) confirming that you don't have contact with the non-custodial parent and no way of getting their information. They basically said that if a parent simply won't give you information, rather than there not being any way of contacting them to get that information, you are basically SOL for need-based aid.
