FLAS

Post by kylemolodets » Sat Oct 17, 2015 3:28 pm

Is anyone familliar with FLAS? I study Russian and have had several internships in Ukraine and Russia, but I for the life of me cannot find a list of schools that qualify for Russian FLAS. Is there a place where I can go and it will list them all? It'd be useful as I get ready to apply in the coming month. Sorry, kind of new to the whole financial aid thing. (BYU is pretty cheap)

Just remember if you're applying now, by the time you're eligible as a rising 2L the school and the center's funding might not get reviewed. I'm not exactly sure for how many years the funding is approved. So, I'd advise you to contact the department/center at the school and ask how their prospects for renewed funding are/timeline for the next time the government has to review funding. For example, UNC is one of the few schools with several centers that receive FLAS funding. However, I think during the government's most recent funding in 2015, they did not fund the East European department, but funded all others like Africa/East Asia/Middle East/West Europe/Latin America.

P.S. Good luck navigating this in law school. UNC has several centers and between jockeying with the graduate schools, financial aid, administration hoopla, you find that you know way more than anyone else. Plus, UNC awarded full year FLAS scholarships, but we didn't find out we were actually going to get funded until well into the fall. Lol. Still had to pick our area classes and attend language classes as if we knew we were getting funded just in case lol.

Hopefully the admin at your school will know better.
