PSLF payments - 120 in a row?

My career office is telling me that 120 qualifying loan payments under PSLF must be consecutive. The DoE's info, though, seems to make it pretty clear that the 120 qualifying payments need not be consecutive. I'm currently in a public service job. Can I go abroad for 6 months for language learning without fucking up my financial future?
