So, I'm interested and was going through the UVA list of external scholarships.

I'm noticing a lot of $1,000, 1-3 page essay scholarships from various law firms around the country. But almost all of the ones I'm talking about have the same opening statement, which is roughly:

LAW FIRM is pleased to announce a scholarship available to students anticipating attending school in the fall of 2015. The $1,000 scholarship is intended to help defray first-year expenses for students that have been accepted into an school anywhere in the United States.

What's up with that? Are they legit? Are they at all connected? Can I send the same essay to all of them?

I don't know about those specific ones, but some firm scholarships require that you dedicate a summer internship or associate position to them. The ones for 2Ls and 3Ls may sometimes require accepting a full-time job offer from the firm. It's just something to be wary of.
