Received a gift before applying to law school
A family member opened an account as a graduation gift with 5K in it. How will it affect my scholarship situation? Will it affect my merit scholarship in any way? I don't think I will qualify for a need based aid because of my parents’ income, but if I still do, will having 5K in a bank account lower it? Should I just close the account?
I will greatly appreciate advice on it.

Nope, shouldn't affect anything, unless you get into HYS.oceanmd wrote:A family member opened an account as a graduation gift with 5K in it. How will it affect my scholarship situation? Why are HYS more uptight about gifts?

Going to HYS is like being a postal employee. If they find out you received a cash gift, you're done.Seoulless wrote:Why are HYS more uptight about gifts?

I was being a dick. They're not more uptight, they are just the only schools that give predominantly need based aid. Other schools are mostly just going to give you money based on "merit," so how much money you have doesn't matter.BillsFan9907 wrote:ExplainElston Gunn wrote:Going to HYS is like being a postal employee.
