I had the same problem. It sounds like they're trying to get your deposit and not give any additional $$ imho. Caveat debtor

I got the same response. Given my numbers, its my opinion that they will go up in the amount of money offered but only if they determine that I'm serious which will happen if I pay the deposit.

They will have a better idea of both whether you are serious about attending, and what money is available after the deposit deadline.
A certain amount of admits who have scholarship offers will withdraw (or not deposit) which will throw that money back into the pool. Also they will know which numbers they need (if say a lot of splitters deposit they might need GPA, if a lot of high LSAT scores go elsewhere they might start looking to add money to encourage splitters to attend).
