Negotiating Scholarship After 1L
I have a friend who is teetering on top 15%. I go to a TTT that hands out what seems like a pretty decent amount of scholarships. That said, he/she is not on any sort of scholarship right now and I was curious if top 15% was good enough to begin negotiating for some scholarship money to stay. If so, how should they go about it? Should they go to admissions and discuss transferring (even though they don't want to)? Should he/she just discuss things with financial aid?
PS: I apologize if this has already been answered somewhere, but I am super busy with a memo due Thursday and a midterm Friday.
Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same position, wondering the same thing. Is there anyone that can offer some guidance?

Did this person ever have any luck? I go to the same school as you and would be interesting in hearing the result. A friend of mine did ask for a scholarship after he ranked very high after 1L Fall semester, but they turned him down.

I think it depends on your school. Mine actively sent out emails to people in the top 5% that didn't have scholarship. I don't think it was a lot of money, and there definitely weren't a lot of people eligible for it because most of us had $$.

I ranked top 15% and was given an additional 20% of my entering scholly after 1L. Was hoping for more. How do I ask for more?

hahaha maybe my school is just stingy, but to me that's pretty generous. Send them a nice letter. I don't know if you much more to leverage with.

I'm at UH. I was able to squeeze something out of them after being well within top 5% but I had to beg. But, it was nice and greatly appreciated.

Yea I'm in the begging phase right now, but they don't seem to care too much.brose wrote:I'm at UH. I was able to squeeze something out of them after being well within top 5% but I had to beg. But, it was nice and greatly appreciated.

Negotiate from a position of strength. Send out several transfer applications. If you're not willing to transfer, then why should your current school offer money to stay ?

I applied to H and Columbia. Couldn't afford any other apps though.CanadianWolf wrote:Negotiate from a position of strength. Send out several transfer applications.

Even if you did send out apps, I wouldn't think that you would have any strength until you were accepted somewhere else but what do I know.

Yea I'm waiting for responses. I inquired about scholarships right before I put in my transfer apps.brose wrote:Even if you did send out apps, I wouldn't think that you would have any strength until you were accepted somewhere else but what do I know.

Starting to think I should try and get something or that I should've thrown a couple of transfer apps (even though I probably wouldn't have transferred). Paying sticker currently.

Uh, yeah! I didn't throw out any apps and asked and got something. I think that may be pretty nontraditional, but it never hurts to try.queenlizzie13 wrote:Starting to think I should try and get something or that I should've thrown a couple of transfer apps (even though I probably wouldn't have transferred). Well I tried. Did not work at all. I am applying to outside scholarship stuff so maybe I'll get lucky and get something.brose wrote:Uh, yeah! I didn't throw out any apps and asked and got something.
