Outside of the very tippytop schools (Harvard/Yale), there is very little purely need-based aid given at all. Some schools (e.g. Northwestern) say they give "combined need and merit," but people rarely receive more than their numbers would have made likely anyway. There are exceptions, of course, but most people are pretty safe assuming they won't be getting need-based aid.
