Negotiating Scholarships

Post by kakaa001 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 4:09 pm

Here's a question:

I got a decent offer from USD, but I have offers from higher ranked schools. Obviously, I'm going to include those offers in my email for negotiation.

However, my safety school offered me a full ride, but they are unranked. Do I bother including this tidbit in my negotiations or is it best to leave it out?

IMO the worst that could happen is they just completely disregard it, which is probably the most likely scenario.

I don't see how it could hurt though, provided you adhere to the other standards involved with negotiations (i.e. professionalism).

I would say it depends on the school and region. If the school has a great reputation within the region, include it. If it is a school that people would laugh at, don't include it. If in between, include it, but do so carefully - do it in such a way that the committee may overlook it without being offended.

I don't think it can hurt in general, unless you are comparing the top school with something laughable. (I can't think of a laughable example, but I'm sure they are out there.)
