Merit and need based aid Forum

Michigan has offered me 45k in merit based aid. Is need based aid assessed at a later time, and if so when should I expect to hear about it? Should I try to use my Columbia admission (don't know about aid there yet) to leverage more $ from Michigan? They say merit aid is set in stone once it assessed, but need based aid can be discussed.

Need based aid depends on the FAFSA and sometimes Need Access. If you got merit money, most schools seem to expect you to do loans for the rest.

But when do the results for need aid come through? After merit aid presumably.

45k = 15k per year.

So what the hell IS need based aid then? From what I'm reading basically no one gets it.
