Do well 1L --> scholarship 2L?
Just wondering if schools that usually give out merit based scholarships to 1Ls will also usually give out scholarships to those who do well first year (w/o scholarship) for their second year? If so, what percentile would you usually need to hit, top 1/3, 25%, 15%? If not, would it be possible if you do very well to transfer up and also get some scholarship?

The only context in which I've heard of this is when a rising 2L has options to transfer up and as a result has a little leverage.

To clarify, leverage with the institution he is trying to leave. They will offer him money to get him to stay.zanda wrote:The only context in which I've heard of this is when a rising 2L has options to transfer up and as a result has a little leverage.

Yes! All you have to do is ask (and...obviously...have done pretty well).
I had almost no scholarship, then got it bumped to 75% when I threatened to transfer T7-14 or to my cheap UG. I have a friend who is in the top 5 (students, not percent) who got the school to give her a full ride before she even applied to transfer by just threatening to apply.
If you have good enough grades, and you've established yourself at the school (and the school administration isn't full of dicks) you can get a scholly bump.
Fortune favors the brave!
PS - Beware insane GPA requirements. I have to keep a 3.5.

I would just like to point out that this doesn't always happen, and sometimes even if you do well enough to transfer, your school may not offer you anything to stay.

Depends on the school. Iowa uses scholarship funds only for recruitment, never for retention. Nick Wallace at Minnesota, on the other hand, said that some funds are used to retain top performing 2Ls.
