Take the 10K or no?
Hey all,
So my cost of living and tuition for my first year is $79,920. I haven't even started my loans for my JD yet (doing my MBA/JD). Luckily, I just got a scholarship for $10,000!
My first inclination is to subtract that $10,000 from my grad plus loans. Would there be any reason I'm not seeing to still take that 10K offered in my loans and keep it in case of an emergency? Like maybe to just apply for it and if I don't need it tell them when they disperse the money to me?
I'll probably be getting my JD at Davis, so with their cost of living that'll be another $174,915 in loans. Would another 10K really matter and I should get it for a possible emergency, or does every cent count and I shouldn't ask for it?

I'm confused. Is this an external scholarship? Have you reported it to your school?
Usually your school will reduce the amount of loans available by the amount of non-loan aid you're receiving. As in, once your school finds out about this, you'll get $10K less in loans offered to you.

Yeppers. The amount of gradplus loans available to borrow is equal to your school's calculated COA, less any other loans (e.g, Stafford) and/or scholarships.vanwinkle wrote:I'm confused. Is this an external scholarship? Have you reported it to your school?

So, let me get this straight you're planning on taking out $250,000+ loans to get two useless degrees from UC-Davis?
Jesus, just take the extra 10K, you will never be able to pay that back anyway, if you're going to be that irresponsible and become a burden of the state, just go all out.

I know, but at the very least they have a great repayment plan. Assuming I don't get into Berkeley or USC (see my stats, that's a pretty strong indication I won't), with my WE I'll be more then able to work in Public Interest (like VLSP) and be okay. I think I'll be fine to wait till I'm 40 to be debt free as long as I'm doing what I love. A lot of people are a lot worse off.

I am not a PI-minded person, but word is that Hastings' PICAP is superior to Davis' LRAP. Also I'd check with SoftBoiledLife regarding public interest recruitment at Davis.Xnegd wrote:I know, but at the very least they have a great repayment plan. Re: Take the 10K or no?
Will do, thanks much for the help!!!
Fyi - I did look at it breifly yesterday, and I saw that they allow you a higher salary ($70,000 at Hastings, $60,000 at UCD). Again, I'll check it out more, thanks!
p.s. What does "alt" mean?

An existing TLS user who created an alternate account, often to troll with. Mods can see things that let us know when someone is an alt of another user. You're not allowed to have multiple accounts going without prior approval, and you're especially not allowed to do it to troll.Xnegd wrote:p.s. What does "alt" mean?

curious as to whether the offensive username was necessary or sufficient here?vanwinkle wrote:Banned for offensive username + being an alt.Clarence's Big Penis wrote:So, let me get this straight you're planning on taking out $250,000+ loans to get two useless degrees from UC-Davis?
