Identity Theft- Can I still take out big loans?

Post by mbenesh » Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:13 am

Not sure if anyone knows the answer to this question. I am a recent victim of identity fraud. There are 3 credit cards in default in my name with my social security number which are not mine on my credit report. Two of them have been investigated and closed since I filed a complaint. I have to start the whole process over on the third one because it was opened more recently. I am not sure the investigation (the last one was lengthy) will be over by the time I have to take out my law school loans. Will this defaulted card impact my ability to take out plus loans?

The rest of my credit is good- I have a three year car loan which I paid in full after a year and a half, I'm ahead on my undergrad loan payments and my personal credit card I've had for 10 years and I pay the balance every month.

Any insight would be helpful.
