Private loans and timing

When are you supposed to take out bank loans? I'm an international student (will have US cosigner) and am trying to figure out how much I can put off taking out loans-I'm traveling right now (Thailand rules!) and want to keep the fun going as long as possible...how late is too late?

Do you mean for your 1L year? Your school should give you a recommended timetable, it's usually something like apply in June or July, funds are approved by August, and disbursed end of August/beginning of September.
