Negotiating for Scholarships While on Waitlist

Post by PlugInBaby » Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:24 pm

I have been WL at a school in which both my LSAT and GPA is above the 75th percentile. I have been offered $20k/year from a similarly ranked school. However, I like the former school much more than the latter. Would it be presumptious to lobby for scholarship money on a LOCI in this instance?

Don't do it.

You should try it and tell us how it goes.

Bad idea. Mentioning your scholarship to Kent in the LOCI might be worth it, but it's silly to act like they have to buy you away from Kent when they didn't admit you in the first place.

Take it one step at a time, first get in, then get money.

Lobby for the acceptance first. Then lobby for money.

Go for it: "I'll only consider staying on your WL if you match my $20k/yr scholarship."

On second though, try this...

Worst idea ever. This has to be a flame. If they put you on the waitlist, they didn't want you that much in the first place. Why would they entice you to come when they haven't even decided if they want you?

PlugInBaby, I think that you should allow the remainder of your cycle to be an expirment that will benefit the entire TLS community.

Clearly, no school is going to offer you money while you are on the WL, but I encourage you to write to schools and let them know that you are so desparate to attend that you will actually pay more than the going rate if they let you in.

Maybe? I figured it was YP. In which case $$ is very possible, just after an acceptance, not before...

I only considered it because of where my stats lie in comparison to the 75th percentile. Perhaps they thought I wasn't serious about attending the school in the first place, I have no bloody clue why they WL'd me.

It baffles me how two similarly ranked schools can come to two ridiculously different conclusions (basically everything was the same in each application).

Except that negotiating scholarship money is predicated on you arguing you will go somewhere else if not given money...which is what YP'ing is all about. Once your admitted...you have no bargaining position. But if you attempt to bargain before your in...why would they admit you and risk their yield?

Thanks to the majority of you guys for the constructive criticism. I will work on LOCI #2 if necessary sans the scholarship lobbying. Either way if the top two don't work out, Kent with 20k/year is not a bad consolation prize at all.

What would have truly been facepalm worthy was to do what I proposed without asking for others' opinions.
