Deerfield and Northbrook aren't too bad if you are driving in on 94, or taking metra. But they are pricey. Good area with decent schools though.

If you are considering renting, Lincoln Square is in the city and family friendly.

What do folks think we need to plan on for childcare costs? From what I've heard $1200/kid/month. Maybe we should just make him get a job...

I hate to tell you, but it might be more...
I believe NU has some kind of daycare facility, but I may be confusing them with another school... but it's worth looking into.
I can't tell you what the costs are in Chicago right now, but in NYC going rate for a sitter (FT) is $15/hr, to start. (2 kids)

Man, here's hoping chicago is cheaper than NY, otherwise I hope folks at NU don't mind a 1 year old toddling around the library!

I can only speak for my own area (north Lake County), but for a 1 year old it costs somewhere between $250-275/week for full time at a Montessouri (where I've sent my son). If I wanted just a regular daycare it's probably well below $200/week.
