Would this be a bad idea for a diversity statement?

I'm PR but never really faced too many negative life effects due to it or really even was exposed to the culture. This was due to my father having a fallout with his side of the family, which is PR. 2 years ago a village in my extended families town in PR was destroyed and my family flew down to help them rebuild their house. I learned SO MUCH about my heritage over that summer. Would this make for a bad diversity statement since it's not very typical of how I overcame something due to my diversity?

to the contrary. that sounds like a great idea for a diversity statement. I was expecting you to say something a lot stupider.
