Are all Hispanics considered URMs?
I've been all over the internet trying to gain some knowledge about whether or not all Hispanics are URMs (for admissions purposes) or only Puerto Ricans and Mexicans. So far I've seen everything from people saying that only these two groups of Hispanics will receive boosts to others that say that any Hispanic is considered a URM and yet others that say that each individual university chooses what groups are considered URMs.
A little background; I am Hispanic of European descent (All of my grandparents are from Spain and immigrated to Colombia where my parents were born). My parents immigrated to the United States in the 80s during the height of war and drug violence in Colombia and I was born here in the U.S. I hold dual citizenship and my family lives in a very wealthy suburb of NY although we are only upper middle class. I speak both English and Spanish as native languages and attended a private university for my undergrad degree.
I am a little bit worried about my status as a URM. I will put down that I am Hispanic because I am although I am a little bit worried because I fit neither the "disadvantaged" nor "dark skin" stereotype that is commonly associated with URM status. I guess to sum it all up my question is: Do all Hispanics receive a boost from admissions or is it only those that fit certain categories such as being Mexican/ Puerto Rican? What about non-traditional URMs such as wealthy AA or wealthy/white Hispanics?

You might get a small boost but it probably won't be as substantial as someone who's mexican/prican and actually disadvantaged. I think you should be honest on your application because I'm not sure if you're actually considered Hispanic since your parents are from Spain. I do suggest talking about your upbringing in Colombia though, that would make an interesting PS.

You are for all intents and purposes, Hispanic if you descend from those of Spain or their descendents in other central and south American countries. You can check the URM box legally and ethically and let the cards fall. BTW, not everyone from Mexico is dark-skinned and dirt poor, that's racist.
You lucky bastardo, I'm descendent from Portugal and therefore I'm just 'white' according to the government. lol

There is no URM box on any application I've seen. The schools ask for your ethnicity and that's it. Sometimes schools will provide just a Hispanic/Latino option, and sometimes they'll provide an option for MA/PR/other Latinx groups to identify more specifically.RCSOB657 wrote:You are for all intents and purposes, Hispanic if you descend from those of Spain or their descendents in other central and south American countries. Also, thing like URM boosts are likely considered in light of your socioeconomic situation. Not to say that it'll erase the URM boost but whatever boost you get may not be hugely significant.
