Which volunteer position would look best for law school?

Post by jdwinn0963 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 12:43 am

I have been offered two different volunteer positions. The first one being at the county court running the informations desk and the other one being for a political campaign for the upcoming gubernational election in my state. I want to choose the position based on which one would look best on my law school application. Which one should I consider accepting?

It probably won't matter for admissions either way and you should more-so consider which you think would look best for interviewing down the line. What will you do in each position?

What do each entail? It probably won't make a difference, but I personally would pick one that provides more substantive experience that I could talk about in job interviews.

Based solely on your descriptions, I assume that the Information desk position would be a lot more client-facing, while the political campaign position will involve a lot more event coordination/back-office admin work. If this is indeed the case, I feel that the political internship would be more beneficial. I know that you're thinking that something law-related would take priority, but adcomms will still look into what exactly you did i.e. ask you questions or want you to fill-in the blanks for them within your application. In a political internship (based on my own experience doing one this past semester: pm for more info,) there is a lot more room to be proactive and take on responsibilities as they come along. At the very least, political work a bit a more easy to embellish, as "coordination" is an umbrella term encompassing many different tasks.

Don't worry about how it will look. Pick the one that will give you the best experience and most allow you to develop skills you want. Also, consider mentorship opportunities in each position.
