Re: 3.0, 161 Female URM-- HELP!
sunnyd101 wrote:Hi all!
This is my first post on this site, although I have lurked/stalked pretty heavily over the past year. I am just wondering what my chances are at the T-50, or even the T-20 if at all possible. I am a female URM, 2 years work experience, decent softs and LORs, 3.0 GPA, 161 LSAT (150 and 153 previously), and a PI heavy application. I just need some advice because this whole process is super confusing. I am not retaking. Where do y'all think I should apply? I am also thinking of sending Duke an ED application.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated (besides the typical "retake" blurbs). Thank you in advance!!
I think you actually have a good shot at the T20 schools.....try USC, GW, Cornell, NU, and GTown, and throw a hail mary at 2 or three T10's.....

Forget about "T20" and "T50". They are arbitrary and misleading cutoffs.
Where are you from?
Where do you have ties?
Where do you want to practice?
What kind of URM are you?

You have to be more explicit about your URM status. Are you AA, MA, etc.sunnyd101 wrote:Nova wrote:Forget about "T20" and "T50". They are arbitrary and misleading cutoffs.

I am from NYC, but I have ties to the Midwest and New England as well. Not really sure where I want to practice at this point-- it's all up in the air. And I am a mix of two different URM races/ethnicity (this in itself was a confusing concept). I have relied pretty heavily on TLS for advice so I really appreciate you guys being open to giving advice to a newbie like me!

when you put both on your apps, you'll probably be considered as an AA. this is a good thing because AAs tend to get the most out of any URM boost. I'd say you have a shot at some top 20 schools.

it's tough to say because your numbers are uncommon(most URMs with a 160+ lsat have higher GPAs), so finding data on lawschoolnumbers or mylsn is difficult. the best advice I can say is to blanket the top 20 and then apply with fee waivers to schools outside the top 20 that you like.sunnyd101 wrote:Typhoon24 wrote:when you put both on your apps, you'll probably be considered as an AA. this is a good thing because AAs tend to get the most out of any URM boost. Thank you! I've sent out a bunch of applications to some lower ranked schools but I think I'll send out a few more to some T20s. Which do you think would be the most forgiving of my mediocre stats?

So would EDing to Duke not be a good idea?

Did you happen to attend an elite undergraduate institution?
You might have a shot at Cornell ED, too

You'll probably get GW, but it'll probably be at a price that isn't worth it. I applied in undergrad with similar numbers and my highest acceptance was GW with a small scholarship (I believe it was need-based).
Good luck

I actually wouldn't advise her (?) to ED to GW because they give full-tuition scholarships and it would probably be harder to get in ED than RD.Kool-Aid wrote:You'll probably get GW, but it'll probably be at a price that isn't worth it. I didn't advise her to do anything, I gave her my thoughts on where she had a chance of getting accepted.lemons wrote:I actually wouldn't advise her (?) to ED to GW because they give full-tuition scholarships and it would probably be harder to get in ED than RD.Kool-Aid wrote:You'll probably get GW, but it'll probably be at a price that isn't worth it. Personally, I think she should retake if possible.

Don't ED anywhere. Blanket the T20-ish. Decide the region where you want to practice, at least broadly -- midwest, north east, southeast, mid-atltantic. Send apps to the highest ranked schools in the area where you want to practice and where schools have the best placement rates. For example for midwest, do Northwestern and Chicago obviously, but also throw apps at U of I and WUSTL.
