Retake 170?

Post by Hapalawyer » Tue Jul 09, 2013 11:53 pm

I am a part AA with a 170/3.6 hoping to do PI work. I've read on this forum that 170/3.5+ AA/Part AA is a shoo-in everywhere but Yale, is this true? Would retaking and getting a 171 or a 172 change things drastically?

Thanks

Nope you are solid. The chance of scoring higher is smaller than the chance of scoring lower (which is a negative). Sit on that score and enjoy your cycle.

Some bad advice ITT.

We have just about the exact same numbers/URM (see profile) and I'm retaking in October.

Our GPAs are a smidge low so 170 is good but not mortal lock.

No reason now to retake if you can notch up a couple points.

What score would you consider to be a lock?

I don't see how a 3.6 170 as an AA makes you a LOCK for Harvard.

Can I see stats on that? Seems like you'd need closer to a 175 with that GPA, even with AA boost.

I tried searching on MyLSN and I can't find any AAs with those stats in the last 5 years. If I go back to include every year since 03-04... not a single one has ever been rejected from any school.

So maybe I'm wrong lol.

OP asked if retaking and getting a 171 or a 172 would change his cycle drastically, and the answer to that is "no." He would have a stellar cycle either way (as would you).

Yeah great post.

So it seems like 170/3.5 is a lock for AAs at Harvard.

The new myLSN won't allow for specificity of option selection. Weird. Yeah I guess you're good with the 170 but I personally always advocating higher if you think you can do better.

ETA: I was basing all my calculations off of the old myLSN that encompassed all URMs. Under that, 172+/3.5+ was the mortal lock for Harvard but that's not the case for AAs.

170+/3.4+ has a 100% admit rate at Harvard for AAs -

So yeah, you're good to go.

Did all of them have to pay sticker? Or did they just not report their financial awards?

HYS don't give merit aid, which is what people report on MyLSN.

HYS don't give merit aid, only need-based.

Oh ok, so with Harvard you don't know how much $$$ you're getting until you have handed in your financial info?

Yep. Except you're not getting in because you're international.

Thanks everyone for the input! I think I'll be sticking with my 170 and hope for the best. Also, does anyone know what URMs/Part URMs need for named scholarships? (Ex: Levy, Mordecai, Hamilton) Do many URMs receive these scholarships?
