AA male - Who should I believe?
I just had a free consultation with a professional law school admissions counselor. What I was told on the phone doesn't quite match with the accounts that I've seen on this forum and LSN.
Based on threads I've read, it's been my belief that an AA male with a 159/3.5 has a decent shot at top law school. However, according to this expert, that may not be so due to the quality/reputation of undergrad.
I attend a CSU, double major, and I am nontraditional...
I've seen posts about AA males getting into amazing schools with these numbers. Who should I believe?

I'd be more apt to believe people/statistics that have no interest in trying to sway you into giving them money.

Depending on how long you studied I would probably retake though.
Whatever you do, don't pay a "professional consultant" or whatever.

Re: AA male - Who should I believe?
Believe statistics. You have a decent shot from UT-Austin, on down.
But you should absolutely retake. A 165+ makes you a lock at the T14.

I'm an AA and got into a top 50 legal program with $$$ with a LSAT below a 150.

this. I know of someone with like a 3.2 and 166 who got into NYU with $$, and may have actually gotten into HJohn_rizzy_rawls wrote:Believe statistics. You have a decent shot from UT-Austin, on down.

Cool. Well so that future people reading this post don't make an equally bad decision, I wouldn't recommend going to law school with an LSAT below 150 unless you have maxed out on retake options and were lucky enough to attend a regional powerhouse school cheaply.sparty99 wrote:Bitch, I didn't ask for your opinion.Br3v wrote:I get you are trying to help but this is of limited usefullness. Re: AA male - Who should I believe?
You should strongly consider retaking the LSAT. Just a few more points would make you very competitive for the T14.

This. The sky is the limit for AAs with a 3.5+ / 165+. Retaking could easily get you into HYS, OP.romothesavior wrote:You should strongly consider retaking the LSAT. Just a few more points would make you very competitive for the T14.

Re: AA male - Who should I believe?
It seems like the problem is what you consider a "top law school." You certainly won't get in to the best of the best, but where is your cutoff of a top school?
Edit: Retake is the best option.

I consider T25 to be top schools for AA males, but I've seen quite a few do well from lower schools.KD35 wrote:It seems like the problem is what you consider a "top law school." You certainly won't get in to the best of the best, but where is your cutoff of a top school?

Then head over to the LSAT prep threads on TLS and try some different methods. I took a class and had a 9pt jump, but there are tons of great approaches. The LSAT is a test of preparation.flat-fifth wrote:I consider T25 to be top schools for AA males, but I've seen quite a few do well from lower schools.KD35 wrote:It seems like the problem is what you consider a "top law school." According to this state bar data, there does appear to be a proclivity, if not an outright preference, for certain undergrads in my state. Are law schools simply receiving more apps from certain schools?

EDIT FOR INCREASED HELPFULNESS>
If you'd retaken the LSAT, you'd be going to a school with significantly better job prospects. (:

Re: AA male - Who should I believe?
You say that now, but realistically nothing is ever enough. Before i started prepping for the lsat all I wanted was my local T2. Started prepping reading TLS all I wanted was a t14. After first semester all i wanted was to be above median. After second semester all i want is a chance to transfer to HYS. You get the point. I could have waited a year done much better on the lsat, and got a better school. However, I rushed it and am at a great school that I'm happy with, but I still think what if. Would Harvard open up politics? So theres where the regret lies. Def don't leave points on the lsat table if you are capable of better.flat-fifth wrote:I consider T25 to be top schools for AA males, but I've seen quite a few do well from lower schools.KD35 wrote:It seems like the problem is what you consider a "top law school."
