Hispanics of Mixed Heritage Choosing Race Box in LS Apps

Post by andreskicdo » Mon Nov 05, 2012 2:23 pm

As all Hispanics applying to law school right now are aware, when filling out applications, many schools ask you to choose your race. I am from mixed heritage (White, Black and Amerindian). This is known as mestizo back in my native country of Colombia. For the US census I declared I was of mixed race, but did not specify the race. What have other Hispanics of mixed heritage have done in this situation. I am sure i am not the first one to have this question. I am jsut not sure what to choose when filling out that section.

Thanks for any insight you guys can provide.

:D

I dont know how much help i can be but this is what I have been doing after inquiring about the same sort of question. I am 1/3 spanish, 1/4 mexican, and mixed european for the rest.

In the ethnicity area I put yes to Hispanic or Latino, then choose both Chicano/mexican-american and Hispanic/Latino other.

Then under race I put European/Other as well. For you I'd select yes to being hispanic or latino, then choose Hispanic/other latino. Then for race choose african american and caucasion.

Very interesting mix of blood! Goodluck with ur cycle, you will have a great chances at top schools considering your heritage!

Hi,

I am having the same dilemma, as well. I am indicating that I am Mexican-American under the Hispanic box, but when it comes to the race box I cannot seem to decide what to indicate. I was born in the US to Mexican parents, but they are of Spanish and Lebanese descendance, thus not fitting under the mestizo, Amerindian, etc. Help?

I feel like you're White Hispanic, but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Could be that I'm just thinking of Shakira or Selma Hayek.

No, I would agree given that Lebanese is considered white in the US as well, so white for the race box/Hispanic for the ethnicity sounds about right?

Spaniards and Lebanese are generally white.
