163/3.4 - URM - T14 Chances?

Post by inaki » Fri Nov 02, 2012 12:40 pm

Hi long time lurker - TLS has been so much help the past couple months hoping I can get some feedback on what I should do.

163/3.4/URM - MA male - top 25 undergrad, strong softs - paralegal at V10 firm, president of a large student org, first-gen american, fluent in spanish.

T14 chances/money applying now? ED at UVA? (virginia resident), ED at Northwestern? or retake in Dec, hope for a few more points and go regular decision for T14 applying in Jan?

I've looked at LSN and it's been somewhat helpful but I could use some TLS wisdom on this.

Retake. Little if any chance at a T14.

You would have to apply very soon to have a shot at the T14, but honestly, your prospects do not look too promising. See, http://lawschoolnumbers.com/brutustx and http://lawschoolnumbers.com/calexico. At best, you could get a lower T14 with an early application: http://lawschoolnumbers.com/smm645.

I am usually loath to recommend early decision for any URM candidate simply because URM cycles are notoriously unpredictable. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a URM get rejected/WLed by a lower-ranked school only to be admitted at a higher-ranked school. Unless you have low numbers or there is absolutely no way you can attend any other school, do not ED anywhere; you will more than likely deny yourself a chance to attend a "better" school and preclude any chances of negotiating merit aid using other acceptance offers.

However, I suggest you send in your apps now and inform each school you plan to retake.

Good luck!

Re-took and just got my score back today. 3.4/ 163-->167. Really happy with the results. All apps submitted. Not too many profiles on LSN that I think match me too well.

Chances for UVA/UT? Other T-14?

Your chances at lower T-14 increase dramatically as a 3.4/167, although MA is the weaker of the 4 URM boosts.

Glad the retake worked out for you!!

You are very likely in at UT.

Youll probably get at least one of NU/GULC/Cornell

UVA, not so much. They would rather take a URMs with 3.8s and lower LSATs because it helps them game the rankings. Under both medians at UVA is very tough for anyone.
