3.79/165/URM - Apply now or retake?

Post by mikeylikesit » Mon Oct 24, 2011 5:59 pm

GPA: 3.79
LSAT: 165
URM (Mexican)

I was PTing about 170-172, got a 165 on the October test. I know that's a significant drop, but retaking in December / waiting until January to apply feels like I'll be at a disadvantage time-wise. Hoping for NYU.

Is retaking worth the wait and late application submission?

Thanks!

I think that you probably have a very good shot at NYU without retaking. If you think you underperformed (that is to say, that regardless of your PT scores, you can actually get between 170-172 on test day) it would be worth retaking for the money and the rest of the T6. If all you want is NYU and you're indifferent toward other schools or scholarships, retaking probably isn't necessary. I applied to NYU and got in with a 3.78 and 162 in January and was still accepted.

TL;DR: I don't think a retake is necessary to get into NYU, but it couldn't hurt for money or other schools.
