Help needed from fellow URMs

Post by lisjjen » Sat Jan 08, 2011 7:09 pm

I will be applying to one more school for the rest of my cycle. I know this is extremely late. My other 19 apps were out the door by October, but I only applied to schools that gave me fee waivers. STUPID DECISION. Since UCLA and Berkley knew I wanted to work in Cali, they didn't give me waivers.

Now that I have a scholarship offer to UT and an acceptance at UMich, I realize that I could have gotten in those schools if I had have just invested in an application fee. I come to the best and the brightest underrepresented minorities on the TLS community asking for help on two questions.

a) Given how late it is, should I apply to UCLA or Berkley. I'm scraping in the bottom of my credit barrel to get the $87 for one more application. Two more is impossible at this point.

b) I have two versions of my Diversity Statement. One that is 3pp and the other that is 1pg. Would anybody be willing to look over them to tell me what hits harder? This app is going to have to hit like a sledge hammer.

Personally I'm not sure I would bother with Berkeley, because not only do they highly recommend applying as early as possible they also tend to place a large emphasis on GPA. UCLA is probably worth a shot, plus since you got money at Texas, and accepted at Michigan that could give you a good position to negotiate a scholarship from.

Don't want to come across like a douche but if you apply to UC Berkeley ...make sure you spell it right.

Both schools are very gpa heavy. I believe you have less than a 3.5, if your LSAT is less than 165 I doubt you will be getting much money from either school if accepted. So, unless you are strongly considering close to sticker at one of these schools over your current options, I would say save the money.

Congrats on the acceptances, I would throw the app out to UCLA and see what happens. In the grand scheme of things 87 dollars is nothing compared to the expenses we will have in law school. Just wondering what type of URM are you? I am assuming AA b/c Hispanics usually don't get that much of a boost.

Yes. You should apply to at least UCLA. Both schools hold GPA to a high esteem, but that doesn't exclude you from acceptance at either. It is worth maxing out your credit card for a possible acceptnace to either if you are set on working in Cali.

Use the one that is 1 page. Not to sound cocky but you are not diverse to the point where you require > 1 pg. to tell about it. Law school admissions committees are fond of brevity, and using only 1 page to tell about your diverse experiences is much more appealing to them.

Good luck
