Where do I put that I'm applying as URM??

Post by pdrez » Wed Nov 10, 2010 8:34 pm

I have only just begun my first application and there was not a specific part of the app that denotes URM status. Is this standard, and is there any point in the app process that I am supposed to denote "applying as URM?"

I put that I am Hispanic/Latino, but not specifically that I am Mexican. I am a little confused on this part. Am I supposed to discuss this in an addendum?

Thanks for your help!

U dont actually mark down "URM" on your app. U denote your race, and if u happen to b a URM, they'll take that into consideration for a URM boost. Some schools don't make a distinction between "Hispanic" and the various sub-groups that comprise that term, and it probably doesn't matter to them. Once you go through your applications, you'll see that some schools do allow you to mark "Mexican", "Cuban", etc.

If you'd like, you can bring up your URM-ness in a Diversity Statement - there you can write about how your background or w/e will contribute to the incoming class through adding perspective etc etc etc or whatever you like really - check out the diversity samples on this forum.

I'd highly recommend discussing the URM-ness/Diversity/Background thing in your PS or DS because it seems that not every URM is equal - those that can discuss it effectively in some useful way obtain the "full URM boost" as opposed to those who just check the box.
