Sometimes it can get down right confusing on these boards for URMs- especially black guys. Wondering if the URM boost for AA males is exaggerated or a myth all together can cause one to loose sleep at night. However, because of this confusion, I am hoping you all can help give me some insight about my specific scores.

My stats

161 LSAT

GPA 3.98

What are my chances at the T14?

Wow. Awesome GPA.

Blanket the T14 and add a couple preferred T20 safeties if you're feeling nervous. You should be in all over the place, some $$$ should be involved, it's just hard to say where. But you should definitely hit the full T14, even HYS is at least possible.

URM cycles are hard to predict, but as a very high-GPA AA male, you should see good results.

I agree with you, I wasn't THAT excited about my 161. I seriously debated canceling after I took the test...but decided to keep it on a whim. The good thing is that it is up 3 points from June (158). My PT average was around 165. However, My goal is to get into a T-14, and I asked this question because If I have a chance at one now, I'd rather get the application process over with and be forever done with the LSAT.

I know that URM cycles are unpredictable, but a useful rule of thumb I've heard is to think of it like +10 on the LSAT (because that's the average score gap between whites and AAs). So, maybe think of yourself as 171/3.98 and use that to assess your chances. My assessment is that your chances are really, really, really good. I think you're likely to top out somewhere between NYU and Duke/UVA. One of my friends (AA male) had your LSAT score with a slightly lower GPA and those were his options (I think there was also money from Duke involved). Good luck!

Congrats on your high gpa and LSAT score. You have a good chance at all the T14's and should shoot for HYS. Include a diversity statement and a "why X" statement for the schools you really want to attend. The tough decision for you will be to choose between a lower ranked school with $ or a higher ranked school without.

With an AMAZING LSAT score like that, you will definitely be in one of two places next year - Palo Alto or New England!
