(3.34 gpa, 170 lsat) Black Male attempting to break T6
24 y/o. African American Male. Senior at Howard. Applying to law schools this year, most likely by 2nd Cycle. Got a 170 on the LSAT in June. 3.34 GPA. Economics Major. 2 years of internship experience (Banking). Initially intended on going into finance, eventually set goals on entering Corporate Law.
Any advice on target list? (listed below).
Stanford
Harvard
Columbia
Chicago
NYU
Michigan
Virginia
Northwestern
Duke
Georgetown
Howard
*GPA is low because of grades from a previous institution. Besides that, my (Howard) gpa is 3.7 & I also have an impressive upward trend*

Applying to Howard is a waste of money. You will get into at least one of those schools (If not all). You don't need to expand beyond your list.

Its just my sure-fire bet if all else fails. I've heard far too many stories of hopeful urm's applying to law school & ending up empty handed due to their overestimation of their chances at T-14. I know at the very least, I'll be at Howard w/ Scholarship.LLB2JD wrote:Applying to Howard is a waste of money. You will get into at least one of those schools (If not all). Born & raised in Wilmington, DE (Philly Metro). Would rather go away for school. Plus, I've always disliked how close the campus was to the projects of West Philly.sophia.olive wrote:What about penn instead of howard?

Well, rather than Howard, you could look at something like Vanderbilt or WashU (WUSTL). With WUSTL, I'm pretty sure you'd get close to a full scholly.El Rey Negro wrote:Its just my sure-fire bet if all else fails. Write a good essay and enjoy Harvard or Stanford! And, as one of probably 25 African-Americans who will exceed the 170 mark this year, you should have Yale on your list, as well. With that LSAT score, even Berkeley would give you a seat, despite your good, but not stellar, cumulative GPA.El Rey Negro wrote:24 y/o. African American Male. Senior at Howard. Re: (3.34 gpa, 170 lsat) Black Male attempting to break T6
You'll get into every school on that list. Add the rest of the T14 unless there's a place you definitely don't want to be (like Penn), and take Howard off completely. For safeties, you're looking at schools like WUSTL, Vandy, etc. Really, it's a waste of your time and money to apply anywhere outside the top 20 (unless there's some place you're dying to be for a particular reason).
You'll get a lot of money, and in many cases a full ride, below Berkeley. You have very good shot at getting money at the top schools, too.

Seriously? I know I had a shot at CCN but, I figured my GPA would keep me out of the top 3. If I could get into Stanford, I wouldnt apply anywhere else. As far as your question, I never particularly liked Yale. I've always respected it as the premier law school, however it always felt a little too WASPY/Blue-Blood for me.PDaddy wrote: Write a good essay and enjoy Harvard or Stanford! You will def get in at one of the top 6 schools with your score, just make sure you keep your profile open and you should get fee waivers from basically all the T14 so hopefully you won't feel limited about where to apply.
Barring any major fails on your part (awful personal statement, no activities, etc) you will be going to a great law school in the fall and you will probably get some $$$.
Enjoy!
