For AA URM: Vandy or Howard?

Post by manwitaplan » Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:00 am

20K/yr from Vandy
17.5k/yr from Howard

What's a better option for an AA male?

Where do you wish to practice? If in TN, you may want to go to Vandy. If not there (or in any nearby southern state) I'd go to Howard It has a bigger national reputation and the alumni network is extensive. Plus, if you place in the top 1/3 of your class, you're pretty set for BIGLAW.

Are your awards renewable? do you have to maintain grades?

I want to work in NYC. I'm not sure about the specifics for the Howard scholarship yet...it got sent to my old address, and my old roomy opened it for me and just told me how much money I got...

ask around man. this is a tough, tough choice. you'll get a better education at vandy, but oci for firms outside of the southeast will probably be better at howard. i suggest doing your research. please come back and tell us what you ultimately pick, and why.

OP you didn't apply to Fordham/Cornell/BU/BC? They would be better for your goals than Howard or Vanderbilt (unless you have ties to NYC)

This is not really a tough choice at all. He has 20k/yr at Vandy. To get biglaw in NY from Howard he will probly have to be top 5-10% --something you cannot bank on. At Vandy as a black male top 1/3 or 1/2 may his cuttoff for ny biglaw. There is a better chance of you reaching your goals from Vandy, added to the pot, you have a very nice scholly from them. Go to Vandy. If it was sticker then it would be harder to justify but it isnt. Best of Luck OP

I will cede that Vandy is probably the better choice between the two but isn't the general consensus (at least on TLS) that the top 1/3 goes to BIGLAW from Howard and that Howard has a huge NY network? You're probably correct but I always figured it'd be more than top 10%...

Good Luck, OP.
I dont think thats the consensus at all. I would say in a good economy then maybe but ITE its probly top 10% or better for NYC. I talked a 2L about OCI and to use her words "It was brutal." The safer bet here is to go to vandy they have excellent placement even ITE

This is not hard question, Vandy is far and above the best choice in this situation. Go to Vandy and don't look back. Vandy is better for everywhere. I know Howard alums and I know Vandy alums and current students. The only people who will think Howard has a better national rep and placement than Vandy are African Americans who aren't lawyers and don't know anything about the field and Howard alums and their children.

U really shouldn't be debating this. Even if Howard gave you a full scholarship, i would say Vandy. This is a no-brainer.

is the howard scholly even guaranteed for all 3 years? it not being guaranteed should make you without a doubt cross it off your list as a viable option. but even if it was guaranteed i'd still say go to vandy.

Now that I'm thinking about it more and more, just go to Vandy. You'll most likely be better off for it.

In 2005, Howard placed about 16% of the class in NLJ250 firms, compared to 42% at Vandy. Vanderbilt is a far better school than Howard with better job placement. Go to Vanderbilt.

+1.. you're even getting more money at Vandy than Howard... go to Vandy, collect $20k, get Biglaw (if that's what you want) if you are in top 60% of your class.

Thank you for everyone's advice, it's been most helpful. I'm leaning toward Vandy at this point. Still waiting to hear back from georgetown, columbia, nyu, cornell and duke...

Definitely Vandy. The one good thing about Howard is its OCI. However you have to be in the absolute top of your class to get a big law job in NYC not the case for Vandy.

I wish I had your problems....Howard is a targets school for firms with Diversity initiatives, good shot at DC, NY and the mid atlantic region. Vandy is one of the best schools in the south, if not the best in the SEC academically. The is a higer comraderie amongst the AA at Vandy than Howard. Coin Flip....Tails.... VAndy
