Congrats to everyone with acceptances. Ill have all of my stuff sent out to schools by this Friday. I know this topic has been discussed in excess on this site, but do schools view URM applicants from HYPS / Top LACs differently from those who may have attended schools that aren't exalted for their academic rigor :? ?

Also, we need to liven this thread up a bit. There's not as much camaraderie as there was in past cycles.

"I'm sure this is a stupid question, but...what is the "WE" category on the spreadsheet?"

Re: the undergrad, I'm not sure. I'd probably say yes for HYPS (especially the infamous grade-deflating P) and maybe for Top LAC. Maybe my UG institution has been boosting my cycle but it's hard to say because there's not a lot of data on LSN for non-AA URMs to begin with.

Also yes to more camraderie. I think it's partially that there's not as many people ITT as last cycle (at least it seems that way) so it tends to be quieter.

Obviously I'm just guessing but I think that UG institution does make a difference. A GPA from one school such as HYPS is obviously going to carry more weight than a GPA from a school like mine that is a regional school with sub-5000 students. But that seems like common sense to me. But what do I know. :P

I would think that it only matters when making a decision between two applicants with similar stats. For example, if person A has a 3.5 from top-5 school but person B has a 3.58 (probably more like a 3.55) from TTT then, all other things being equal, person A would probably be the winner. The problem is that the "all things being equal" caveat is never actually the case so one can never really make general claims like this.

Applied ED to UChicago and got in. This has been my goal for a very long time and I'm quite pleased about it. :)
Why would you apply ED with your stats?
U could have gotten one of HYS!
Or can u still apply to other schools?

Congratulations on meeting your goal but I also can't help but be curious as to the rationale behind ED...

I wanted to go to UChicago. I didn't want to go to HYS. I did my research, I lurked TLS, and I made my choice. My UG experience pretty closely matches UChicago's academic culture, and I like that - I might do a JD/PhD in Philosophy, and if I do that I like Chicago's faculty best for it.

I know TCR is to apply lots of places for money, but I'll be fine.
Thanks for sating our curiosity. Congratulations again on UChicago and congrats on being rich

Not rich. Graduating debt-free from undergrad, but that's about it. Expecting to pay the $160k or whatever average cost, do whatever I end up interested in (probably biglaw), and not stress about money any more than it is pragmatic to do so.

I don't know whether I'll be a gunner in LS but I wreck curves in UG and do other academic stuff for "funsies" - I lead 3 (school-sponsored) clubs on campus and do a whole lot else. I like studying, I like learning, and I like the law.
Cool, sounds like a plan. I bet it's so nice to have finished your cycle and completed a major goal :) How're you gonna celebrate tonight??

To the poster asking about HYPS URMs, schools definitely favor the big schools, but who knows. I'm at a no-name school and my cycle has gone great so far, while my fellow URM friend at P with similar numbers hasn't heard back too much yet

Congrats Atmosphere!

I love Berkeley so much for coming right out of the holiday break with a wave. I wish certain other Bay Area schools would follow their lead...
Something tells me that certain obscure Palo Alto school is gonna love you :D
