Ugh please please please don't refer to women as females. My number one pet peeve :( (sorry can't help it. it's like hearing nails on a chalkboard to me)

I'm not sure what you're specifically asking about. Do you want to know about which TX school? The Why TX? Whether or not it's a good school? what "Texas reference?"

Not at all. Probably because many of my close friends have attended law school, or have other close friends or family at law school. And they all went to or are at top schools for the most part. Unless I got into HYS they wouldn't be too impressed. I know this all sounds incredibly elitist.

I also have to say that when I got my first acceptance, from USC, I called my mom. And she said, "USC? What's that?". I explained. She wasn't impressed. She's waiting on acceptances from the T14 before she expresses any joy.
Haha, in Texas I get, "Wow you got into Texas?? Did you apply to SMU too?? I know a lot of good attorneys who went to South Texas! Why would you apply to UVA or Michigan?? I've never heard of Chicago, why would you go so far??"
This so much in Houston. I don't want to tell them that it's not that great of a school. I got asked by my boss a few times if I applied to A&M's law school, and I try to use I don't want to live in Dallas as an excuse.

this x a million, thank you. Equally if not more annoying than referring to Latin@ people as "Spanish."

So I'm from Austin. And I remember when I decided to go to UChicago for UG, I just got stares. Like literally, stares. As if, "why are you seemingly so excited?"

Probably a region thing as well. Living in southern California a lot of people know about SC's network and how effective it is. I can see Texas dudes talking about Texas lol. People were like why not try Loyola. I heard that was a top school lol.

Also I have only one close friend who is in law school. He goes to Whiter. No one else knows anything lol.

Yeah everyone talks about South Texas lol. They do produce really good lawyers in Texas. I hate explaining to people that UH/SMU isn't going to cut it for law school

Also why would anyone want to live in College Station for three whole years?? *shudder*
College Station is dope

It's a weird time being in NYC. Every knows NYU, Columbia, and sorta remembers Cornell is in-state. They know Fordham is also pretty damn good. But then there are like 5 other schools here, too. CUNY is even rather well-known just because of the sheer amount of PI jobs that they occupy/are available in this city.

So many law schools, so little time... So glad I'm leaving this place :P

I 100% feel you on this one. People knew I was a good student and that I worked hard in school but somehow they were all super shocked and impressed when I got into USC. Maybe it's being from Southern California because USC is a huge deal down here.

I've had the exact opposite experience. Every time I tell someone I got into Duke or Georgetown or whatever, they're not at all impressed. After the less than enthused "Congrats" comes the "What about Mercer?" question bc that's where every lawyer in town went. None of my friends or family have been to or know anything about law school though so that's probably why they dont care

I am going to have the same reactions for different reasons: family won't know any top schools beyond H, and friends won't care about any school that isn't HYS. Lol.

And' lets keep this forum strictly law school related????

The fact that you come from such an environment is a great thing. In fact, it's the whole point of giving URM's a boost.
You should be proud of that man.

Just to clarify, while I have elitist tendencies, I do not consider myself an elitist, at least in the traditional sense. My parents are from the south side of Chicago. My dad was a career army soldier, and we moved around a bit, and landed in Texas. But I have found myself surrounded by a lot of privilege and affluence, especially in college and post college, living in NYC. And often have found myself being the only POC in a classroom or just room.

Anyway, this is all an incredibly interesting conversation especially as URMs who are aspiring attorneys, and who are clearly thoughtful about the decision itself (hopefully), and where to attend. I feel like this is the only group where I can actually be somewhat open about stuff.
Good to hear that you can be open man. Yeah that's the thing I want us all to excel. I'm happy when I hear people get into top schools. i know how it feels to be the only POC in many settings. I have gotten so accustomed to it. I actually wrote part of that in my personal statement lol. I never jointed BSU or anything but I actually might join BLSA.
