I was actually pleasantly surprised. I applied this cycle just to see, but I had every intention of retaking the LSAT & trying again next year. My first acceptance was American & I realized that this cycle might not be as awful as I originally thought.

I wish I had discovered some of these topics and paid more attention to this forum during my cycle. Hope this helps. . .

Best advice I can give any URM is to take Law School predictor and all those other sites with a big, big grain of salt. Apply to at least a few reaches. Give yourself a chance. Right now I am kicking myself for not doing that. So now, although I suppose i'll be fine, I will have an insignificant but still slightly irksome lingering feeling of "what if".

Study long and hard for your LSATs. It can't be stressed enough; it really does matter.

Also, be smarter than I was and think more carefully about where you want to practice (if you are set on a particular state or region) and tailor your schools to that. That being said, don't be afraid to broaden your options. For someone like me, money is a MAJOR issue and I can't really afford to take as big a gamble as some people can. Taking on anything over 100,000 (a very liberal estimate) in debt is simply not an option for me, fortunately/unfortunately.

Black/Caribbean
3.2 - Top 12 liberal Arts College
169 (December LSAT. studied for two months. in retrospect should have studied longer and harder. LSATS are so, so crucial.)
1 year w/e sort of. multiple jobs. some paid, some unpaid. just keeping busy.
average/ below average softs - at least 5 clubs and orgs per year, board member positions, student gov, dorm presidency, event planning, etc etc.

Applied:
American, Brooklyn Law, Cardozo,Cornell, Columbia, Emory, Fordham, GWU, Villanova, WUSTL

I sent in most apps in mid to late January,a few weeks after I had received my LSAT score.
(wustl and columbia I applied to the day before their deadlines and only because I had received a fee waiver) but I started working on my PS in August of last year and secured my recommendations around that time as well.

IN
Brooklyn 43,000 per year
Emory 20,000 per year
Fordham 20,000 per year
GWU 30,000 per year + free first year housing
Villanova (no idea how much $ if any. guess that means none)
WUSTL 43,000 per year

OUT
nowhere...yet

WAITLIST
American . . .

PENDING:
Cornell
Cardozo
Columbia (not expecting anything from this. well outside their range and also applied far too late. apply early!)

Seriously. Any chance you can wait and apply at the beginning of next year's cycle? You'd be a lock for a T14, and you'd have a pretty damn good shot at any of CCN. Hell, improve your LSAT a few points, and you'd be in amazing shape.

Chibi_koinu wrote:Hi, I'm new to the forum all together (this is my first post :D), but I was kind of looking for a place to tell people where I got in and ask for advice on how to decide.

Stats:
AA/Caribbean
Female
First-gen college student/first-gen American
School: Ivy
Major: Psychology w/two minors (African American Studies & East Asian Studies)
GPA: 3.3 (dept: 3.56)
LSAT: 159 (sept), 161 (dec)
I'm going in straight from undergrad so I'm currently still in my senior year at school, and don't have any real "work" experience other than summer-long internships in public service (urban communities). Other than that, I've been very active in student groups (prez of Caribbean organization) & our diversity center for all 4 years, worked 2 jobs for all 4 years.

Accepted:
Rutgers--Newark: $
Seton Hall: $$
Temple: $$ (full tuition)
Penn State: $$
Villanova: $$
BLS: $ (I dunno how much yet haven't received package in mail yet)
BU: dunno about money, but probably not
Cardozo: $$ (full tuition)
Fordham: (just got in today by email, so I dunno if I got money or not until I get the package in the mail)

Pending:
Columbia
NYU
UChicago
Harvard
Cornell

No rejections so far (thank God!), but I'm really confused about where I should go. My top choice is Columbia but I think I'm a shot in the dark. I wouldn't mind doing the whole Fordham or Cardozo thing, since I want to practice/work in either NY or NJ (NJ native).

Thanks for this thread guys! If anyone has any info/advice for me, please don't hesitate to write me or reply! :)
Haven't seen much activity on this topic in a while, but just a little update since it seems many schools are making a mad dash to get decisions out before mid-April.

IN at Cornell
HELD at Columbia & Harvard
WL at UChicago (but I will probably withdraw)
NYU still pending
Withdrew from Rutgers & Penn State, will most likely also do so at BLS, Temple, Villanova, and BU.
Still seriously stuck between SHU, Cardozo & Fordham at the moment. But, if I got into Columbia (DREAM) or NYU, I'd probably go to one of those.

Ciao! And good luck to everyone in the last few days! :D

Cycle over, so I thought I'd finally post to this thread.

AA, male
GPA: 2.8
LSAT: 158
7 years work experience in community organizing

IN:
WUSTL $
GMU
Cardozo $$
Brooklyn $
SHU $$
Buffalo $
Loyola Chicago $
Hofstra $$$ (Full Tuition)
Albany $$
NYLS $
Drexel $
Widener $$$ (Full Tuition)

OUT:
St. John's

WL:
De Paul
Fordham

If I had to guess I'd say the soft factors - especially my work experience - helped me out. I also have a very unique background. My personal statement was above average (from what I've been told by an ad deans). In it I spoke about my background & work experience.

Ditto on taking LSP with a grain of salt. Though I'm very happy that I got into almost all of my reaches, I wish I had applied for a T14.

Black Male
GPA: 3.63 (3.65)
LSAT: 160,164

In: Stanford (35k/yr), Columbia, Chicago (10k/yr), Berkeley, UMich, Duke, Cornell, Georgetown, Vanderbilt (27k/yr)
Out: UCLA
WL: Yale (still on), Harvard (riding that too), Upenn, UVA, Emory
Softs: Selective unique internship, campus leadership, scholarly awards, started a small company, study abroad
PS: About the internship
DS: About growing up black in my small semi-rural city

Don't trust LSP. I think quality of writing is really what distinguishes black applicants. I heard that the reputation of my undergrad helped but I have no way of knowing. Shoot me a PM if you want more info.

Wish I had seen this thread before, I'd like to help next year's application class:

URM - AA male
LSAT - 168
GPA - Was a 3.7 when I applied in late December, but dropped down to 3.6 due to last fall semester

Yale - Rejected
Stanford - Waitlisted
Harvard - Accepted (and attending)
Columbia - Accepted
Chicago - Accepted
Duke - Accepted (with $$)

Withdrew from NYU and Michigan before receiving a decision. I applied on 12/29 for all except for YLS, which I applied to in late January.

Very involved in student government and a nearby domestic violence clinic throughout all four years. Wrote a DS on growing up in very difficult socioeconomic conditions.

I think my essays were good (but I have no basis to compare them to). One good LOR from a professor who was a HLS alum tailored to HLS, and one that was good enough to get me into my first choice.
