Depending on how gay-friendly the area is, I think once you get above 2-3 million people in a metro, you're anonymous enough. After 7-8 million people, there seem to be huge diminishing returns on cost and quality of life. Of course, it all depends on how the city is structured, but mega-regions like New York, Hong Kong, and Tokyo just seem like overkill to me on many levels.
I've been living in the suburbs since graduating from UG, and I honestly miss walking around in a sea of people. Grew up in an urban environment, and the sprawl isn't doing much for me.
I hate HATE suburban life. You can live an "urban" lifestyle in most decently-sized US metros without having to pay $2500/month in rent for the privilege of living in the City.
And I like cities where there's enough mass transit to get around in my day to day life, but I can also have a car if I feel like being American.

I very much agree. There are so many incredible med size cities in the US. That said, I prefer mid size cities in the southeast than the Midwest. One of the reasons why I still look at W&L over WashU is that if I have to, I'd rather settle and live in Richmond, Raliegh or Charlotte over STL or different smaller cities in the midwest

This is funny to me because everywhere is a big city for me, mid-size or not. I may not even be clear on what mid-size is. I'm so small town it's laughable.

Moving to DC must have been quite the adjustment for you.

I was born in suburbia, and am currently residing in suburbia before law school and it's fucking mind-numbingly awful. It's street, after street, after street of the SAME. FUCKING. THING.
Oh wow. Another Chase and Starbucks?

Lots of strip malls over here. The one place I'd want to check out is this kosher Chinese restaurant that's run by Orthodox Jews. Total novelty, I think it'd be fun.

I'm from a bedroom community and there's like nothing except houses. To even go to the grocery store you have to get in your car and drive 20 minutes. There's just row upon row of the same ticky, tacky littles boxes.

Things are not that conveniently located. Everything is in city/town centers so everyone drives everywhere and the traffic is terrible. When I was in high school my commute was two hours.

Side benefit. But I also had to leave home at 6.15 every morning to be at work by 8.30.

I would have never graduated HS and I'd probably be dealing meth and doing midget porn if I had that commute.

So annoyed. I hoped to find a flight this week for ~30k miles to STL. No luck.
Is WashU worth 40K miles??
