Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
Honestly, I'm a little overwhelmed by the ASW process. At this point, I am planning for up to 7 (including Berk and NYU), which I know won't be possible because there has to be some overlap with the dates and even with stipends, the expense will be high. I don't really know how to decide which ones to go to at this point. I love certain aspects of every school. :/lc39 wrote:I actually had a kind of opposite experience - loved one school (the school I had always wanted to attend), and hated the ASW experience at the school I ultimately attended for undergrad. The latter school gave me more money (had better need-based financial aid) and I know it was ultimately the right choice but the horrible ASW really made me question my decision.Tr3 wrote:Im not sure. I def wanna go to UCLA since they will pay for it. And then maybe 1 or 2 others depending on how realistic they are as choices. When I did ASW undergrad it really did influence my decision. I was dead set on a particular school, went, and hated it. Meanwhile another school blew me away and I ultimately attended the latter.lc39 wrote: Yikes.
On another note, but also money related...how many ASWs are y'all planning on going to? I really can't tell how valuable these events are (I absolutely hated them when choosing an undergrad) and seeing as I'm only close to 2/13 schools I applied to I know flights from CA to wherever are going to add up. Not to mention the unpaid time off work...
Now I have applied to both of those schools again for law school!
I will be attending Berkeley's ASW (since it's close by) and probably Harvard's but I'm not sure about others. Maybe NYU since I've never been to NYC?

That's not cool for your university to do that, wait does your percentage grade show up on your transcript?gamerish wrote:Off hand, does anyone know under what circumstances LSAC uses your percentage grade instead of the letter grade? My university doesn't use A+ (though that didn't stop them from using A-...) and my GPA would skyrocket if I got the equivalent A+ credit from LSAC for the classes I got over a 98 in. Every little bit helps.

My school doesn't give A+'s either except for rare circumstances. I'd say about 15% of the classes at my school award A+'s. It sucks, but no the LSAC only converts letter grades. Does your transcript even have percentages on it?gamerish wrote:Off hand, does anyone know under what circumstances LSAC uses your percentage grade instead of the letter grade? +1 to the more active OP and my vote is February for LC's triumphant sweep of HYSCC. But better question is which school will be the first to try and lure LC with a named scholarship?LSATneurotic wrote:We really need a new, more proactive OP. New poll:
What month will LC complete her sweep of HYSCC ?

I'm willing to OP but not sure how to make that happen. Is the Moderation Q&A thread the right place to ask?

If this applicant is MA/PR seems like Y has taken their first URM: http://lawschoolnumbers.com/eliot2014
No surprise though, such amazing numbers!!
Also is "HYPS" a thing people say or is she outing herself as a Stanford grad?

Her stats are so good it's hard to believe. Why only apply to Harvard and Yale?
Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you too!
I'm guessing she is updating LSN as she gets acceptances but has applied to more.

I wasn't aware that schools published exact number grades on transcripts. Either way, my inclination would be to believe that LSAC would use the letter grade that you were given.gamerish wrote:Off hand, does anyone know under what circumstances LSAC uses your percentage grade instead of the letter grade? Edit: Never mind, I see you already answered your own question. Merry Christmas to you all. I'll show myself out.

HYPS is definitely a thing. The several HYP folks I've met in my travels would certainly consider Stanford a peer. Well maybe not P folks, but they don't even consider H or Y peers

Anyone have any tips on how to write a fee waiver email to schools? I'm currently waiting for my December lsat score and I wanted to submit the email before scores return. I received an lsac fee waiver in the past so I'll mention that somewhere in the email.

Just be very nice and state your interest in the school, mention your stats and that you're a URM (presumably) and let them know that the fee waiver would remove a significant burden to you making application.Yaaaas2013 wrote:Anyone have any tips on how to write a fee waiver email to schools? Yeah, to add to this make sure you're signed up for Candidate Referral Service on LSAC. Some waivers will come very quickly after the scores are released so if a school turns you down (e.g. tells you no because you don't have an LSAT score, or says they only do waivers through CRS) it can be another way to grab the waiver.cc78 wrote:Just be very nice and state your interest in the school, mention your stats and that you're a URM (presumably) and let them know that the fee waiver would remove a significant burden to you making application.Yaaaas2013 wrote:Anyone have any tips on how to write a fee waiver email to schools? Also, of the T14 Yale, Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley do not give merit-based waivers. Their waivers are given only to students with financial need or those in special circumstances (e.g. Berkeley gives them to TFA alums and current participants, vets, and some others).
