I am in DC aka help why is housing so expensive I did not anticipate this from outside of NYC/SF

I put in my deposit by my second interview - I want to say first week of April?

During the interview, they stressed that they want to know people will return or stay in a particular location so your strong regional ties make sense. I'm guessing at least T-14 school as well.

Dc housing is right behind SF and NY in pricing. The only way to make it reasonable is to rent a room in a row house. You could check out air BnB sublets they are usually cheap but I've never tried them in the summer, I'm assuming the prices go up then.

Also, don't discount living in Northern Virginia (NoVa). I'm​ in NoVa and within about 5 mins (driving) of DC and 10-15 from Capitol Hill, depending on traffic. Metroing to city center takes like 15 mins. I'm right accross a metro stop (though I don't ride often) and I'm paying a lot less (950 in a pretty nice apt vs 1200 for an average row house) than I would've had I lived in the city.

If you are planning on public transit it's not so much DC vs NoVA/Maryland it's more, 'how close am I to the metro?' You can live in DC proper but have long walk to the closet station, though many places are close to one.

poptart is 100% right about living close to the metro (I was spoiled af during my stay with friends so I assumed that everyone was always near one lol)

there's tons of DC subletting pages out there especially for summer interns so it might be doable to find cheaper housing and/or qualify for university dorm housing

Right. And for some perspective, when I first moved to DC and was in Georgetown area, it took about 40 mins to get to Capitol Hill (Georgetown traffic is a B. And the metro stop wasn't walkable so buses and driving were better options). Again, from where I am now in NoVa to Capitol Hill by metro or driving is 10-15 mins.

Also, take a look at the metro map. Metroing from some places in Arlington (blue, yellow, orange lines), for example, into DC will take less time than metroing from and to DC because there are less stops.

Since no one has their firm placement yet for this cycle, we can only guess. Likely firm placement information would include salary that we'd have to accept.

How much do y'all think it would help to submit seat deposit today as opposed to late next week? I am still waiting on one or two schools but otherwise pretty set. I haven't heard on financial aid though and I would have to withdraw from the other programs.

I mean I don't think its worth it to send in a seat deposit on the hopes that you get into a program. If you know you will hear from SFS by sometime next week I would hold off unless you were planning on submitting it anyway. Early can't hurt though I imagine.

No confirmation and it sounds like they have to go and look at your application to know you submitted it.
I told my second interviewer when I deposited and her words basically were, "Great, I'll have to go look!"

It makes sense because we're not directly e-mailing them our deposit confirmations (though I'm certain that I did after my first interview lol) and there's not a special notification when we finally submit our deposits. If there was a notification system, then SEO would be notified every minute someone went back and edited their application during the months of whenever the applications were open.
