Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
Most applications are due March 1.
I am applying to schools where I actually have a shot of practicing. I want to be a Tax or Bankruptcy (corporate or individual) lawyer. Be it that I come from an economics background, I spent all day yesterday crunching percentages. There are some decent schools out there, you just have to go find them. My list is
Super Reach (167+):
Harvard
UVA
Reach (160-167):
Georgetown
Vandy
Emory
Current List (150-160):
Howard
Kentucky
Oklahoma
Arizona
West Virginia
Bubble:
Florida Schools ( UF, UMiami, FSU)
Tulane
UGA
W&M
UR
American Univ (maybe like 20% get big law. The bottom 20% are unemployed)
Every School on my Will Apply list will give me atleast a 50% chance of practicing law and a 30% Chance of landing a firm job. Believe it or not, the academic job market is just as bad, so its just changing disciplines really. I would be perfectly content with attending Howard. The thing about Howard is, if you get a firm job, it is more than likely going to be bigger than 11 attorneys, so it is worth applying to me. Pretty much I am applying blind, because the applications will have to be done before I get a LSAT score back. So based on my last 3 practice tests I take at the end of january, will i ultimately decide where to apply.

I'm liking that list. Very diverse. Might wanna add GW up there.
You sure about American though? It has an employment score of 38% , which is lower than Case Western Reserve law school. Going there potentially at sticker is horrifying.

Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
BankruptMe, you seem like a cool cat. Don't waste your cycle on a bad LSAT score -- if you don't get the score you want/have been practicing at, retake the LSAT until you do. If you've been playing around with the numbers, you know that the difference between Tulane and UVA are massive. And by retaking the LSAT, you open yourself up to a huge amount of scholarship money.
It's actually even more imperative that URMs retake the LSAT when they have the opportunity, because each point increase is worth more than it is for non-URMs. Suppose a 173 would get a non-URM into Harvard, and a 167 would get a URM into Harvard. If you have two applicants scoring a 160, the URM applicant has significantly less "work" to do to get into Harvard than would a non-URM applicant with the same numbers.
Furthermore, you're not going to be nearly as hurt by GPA floors.
Nail that sucker, and don't settle.

Hey twenty what were the numbers from last cycle of the AA's scoring 160 and up, 165 and up, and 170 and up?

The numbers aren't perfect, but they should all be in Nick's post here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... &start=150
I would imagine the number of 170 AA/Mixed Race AA URM scorers that are applying this cycle are unquestioningly fewer than 20.

Yeah I'm just gonna throw them an app... I did apply two years ago with my horrible sub 150 score in march of that app cycle and they waitlisted me so I mean why not...ThePiedPiper wrote:Mandy are you applying to Howard? I was thinking about applying to Howard last years cycle but ended up not applying because I didn't research enough about the school. I may throw them an app in January though.mandyjay11 wrote:Yeah I'm just gonna throw them an app... Yeah i mean idk, I heard they out do their ranking in terms of big law placement, but if I am out of options and they offer me a full ride/ close to it, I might be tempted.ThePiedPiper wrote:

+1 same here. I was thinking the exact same thing. They really do out do their ranking. Which I really didn't know they did.mandyjay11 wrote:Yeah i mean idk, I heard they out do their ranking in terms of big law placement, but if I am out of options and they offer me a full ride/ close to it, I might be tempted.ThePiedPiper wrote:

I only have one success story I kno like that who received a half scholly to GULC.( they gave her a few days to decide or the offer expired since she applied late in the cycle) I'm not a big retake fan , but a 160 at least could open a lot more doors for this person.okaygo wrote:Asking for a friend. In the T 14 I would try for Duke and Berkeley definitely because I know of two people who where accepted with slightly similar numbers. I am not a big fan of telling someone to retake either since you never know a person circumstances. Heck I say blanket the whole T14 and don't go below the T25 with that GPA. Just to see where the person cards may fall. Just my 0.02 centsokaygo wrote:Asking for a friend. How do AA URM splitters usually fair? 3.9x and mid 150s. Don't know the exact LSAT.

Did anyone answer lsac app question to list other schools applying to?
Also what format is best for uploading essays? I was initially told by lSAC that files would be uploaded as JPEG but there is no such option.

IMO he should just blanket the entire T25 from NYU down. Bottom of the T-14 is possible and he'll def get a couple of T25sThePiedPiper wrote:In the T 14 I would try for Duke and Berkeley definitely because I know of two people who where accepted with slightly similar numbers.
