Re: URM 2012-2013 Cycle Final Results
This is definitely not over yet. Waitlists do move. My question is why you didn't apply to the entire T7-14? Why no UVA, Northwestern, Michigan, or Cornell? Was it a small town thing (though that clearly doesn't apply to Northwestern)? If you didn't maximize your chances in this cycle by applying as widely as possible or applying as early as possible, I am confident you would get different and better results if you waited and did both. How much diligence did you do with other parts of your app (DS, PS)? Did you have them read over by multiple people? There are plenty of things you can do to strengthen the soft parts of your application.Psib337 wrote:I spent all of last year studying for the LSAT, the only times I wasn't studying for it was when I was waiting for the scores to come back, it's not likely to get much better than it is now. I can't afford to travel or to stop working to volunteer and after looking for a job twice (once after graduating and once after being laid off) I have never come remotely close to do doing anything I went to school for (and not for lack of trying) or anything where I'd make enough to move out of my parents house. It might be different if I got waitlisted at more places but they were flat out rejections. Cardozo is my best optionbosmer88 wrote:
Law school will always be there. As others have said, you can do a variety of things to improve your application in the meantime. Doing volunteer work that you are passionate about/find meaningful can only make your application stronger. I put off law school for 3 years (while working for 2 of them, volunteered during the 3rd year) until I had an application that I felt was strong enough and would allow me to apply in a timely manner.
Or just get a higher LSAT.
It really is your choice though. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose to do.
I also can't get away from the fact you have a numbers twin, aiaea, who frequents these boards. She's 3.3/162 AAf and had a great cycle http://lawschoolnumbers.com/aiaea/. You may try to point out that she's a HYPS undergrad, and that's fair, but she's consistently credited her exacting attention to every other element of her application to account for her success. She also took the test multiple times, so you're similar in that regard.
But, I think it's more important to be supportive on here than hyper-critical (I think bosmer has done a great job of this ITT). I don't think you're torpedoing your life by going to Cardozo, but you are selling a ton of upside to buy very little downside protection. You know yourself, and if you really think that you can't take another year of working in a job you don't care for, living at home, and enduring another LS app cycle, then I understand. But if there's even a chance you could hold on for one more year and get those applications in in September, your chances are better than not of getting better results. There are reasons to be optimistic about next years cycle--the collapse in applications could continue, opening up further opportunities. Either way, good luck!

Re: URM 2012-2013 Cycle Final Results
I'd go with that, but the H waitlist doesn't make much sense and I would think that at least one of the non HYS schools would go after him with a named scholarship. Most AA's in this stratum are making a choice between a Darrow, AnBryce, Ruby, etc. and HYS.John_rizzy_rawls wrote:YP. Jedi got a great outcome for sure, but his stats plus what's gone on this year suggest he should have had at least a couple more top-tier choices.

This thread makes me wish I did not do a hard sciences major and that I actually tried during undergrad. Low gpa's suck -_-. Also, Danitt don't forget to put in the good word for me at UVA

It is a mystery wrapped in a riddle, that's for sure. For instance, when will someone come forward who is committing to Penn or UVA?danitt wrote:This thread just reminds me of what a clusterfuck URM admissions is. It is so unpredictable.

I did bro! Earlier in the thread. UVA though, not Penn. I didn't even make the waitlist at Penn.dawyzest1 wrote:It is a mystery wrapped in a riddle, that's for sure. Now...will anyone go to Penn? I can't even recall a URM who's seriously considering Penn as a final choice.

Some of these Harvard waitlists make no sense. Will be interested to see how the waitlist movement plays out. At the moment it looks like H is giving away a lot of talent to its competitors w/out a fight.

Re: URM 2012-2013 Cycle Final Results
I'm about to decline Harvard's offer and just want to add that there is a way in which we all manufacture our applications. I've been quite successful against tremendous odds and a lot of it has been that I've spent years doing things I care about and have been successful at them. If you think any app is just numbers you really do fail to recognize the nuance that you can make of your life.
Anyway, it's not for me to tell people what to donor how to see this insane process but a word of advice: they get us just as much as we get them. And be it UCLA, University of Phoenix or Harvard or Yale we better remember when we walk in those doors that our names means as much to someone, as the name of that school might mean to us.

Not really.danitt wrote:This thread just reminds me of what a clusterfuck URM admissions is. It is so unpredictable.
Everyone here, even with fairly low GPAs and LSATs (except for twenty, the dude with no GPA) is going to a T14 or very preftigous T20.
Seems pretty homogenous to me.

Preach! I hope we all remember d's words when we are on campus in the fall and that "impostor syndrome" starts to rear its ugly head.d330 wrote:I'm about to decline Harvard's offer and just want to add that there is a way in which we all manufacture our applications. Re: URM 2012-2013 Cycle Final Results
For what it's worth, there might've been things that may have raised issues for the committees, for example, bad performance one semester that I didn't explain with an addendum--I think all the number crunching made me take my chances for granted, so I skipped this step... never knew who I was up against, though.
At the time, the potential "answers" only led to more questions, like, "What's wrong with me?"...Dean Deal's call made whatever the answer was irrelevant, though.
Still, it's hard to think I was just that deficient in their eyes...unless I am oblivious of my own level of sucktitude--which is possible.

On the Yale and AAm point, we have two TLS friends, d330 and GW who are attending, so their compliment will be at least double what it is in the current 3L class. YLS: Diversity Pioneers.
