I saw an article like this explaining how useless letters of rec are.

From the letters of rec that I've asked for in undergrad, I think the ones from volunteering have been more powerful since they tended to know me better than undergrad professors and employers. Otherwise, I think references are easier on everyone - don't have to hunt down a missing letter/how do I submit a letter e-mails/never really asking last-minute.

Same. I've already submitted my proof of enrollment, so now I'm just waiting. I am hoping we hear this week so I will have a little more time to get my life together (if i get the job).

But yeah. It'd be good to hear back from SEO sooner rather than later because of 2-week notices (for those currently employed), finding a place to live and relocating, making sure you have the appropriate clothes for work, mental preparation for law school, etc.

For real.... I'd be extremely grateful for this opportunity, but the fact that we only hear back at the last minute is really frustrating. I'm currently out of the country, and I'm trying to figure out whether I need to book a return flight in the next couple weeks or not.

damn that sounds like a reason for them to let you know first because those flights are $$$$

did you already deposit and do the second interview? I'm also abroad and during my second interview I explained that I would need to let my current job sooner rather than later, and the director explained that once I deposit, I should shoot them an email to remind them about being abroad.

is there any restriction against double depositing? if i deposit at a top 15 AND a school ranked in the late 30s, and eventually end up going to the late 30s one..

Check your school's website. MOST schools (at least in the T14) say somewhere that they do not allow double depositing.

She also stressed that there are a lot of moving pieces which make placing people sound like a nighmare imho. All of us who applied are URMs though. It also depends on what you put down as your top choices and whatever other criteria SEO judges us by that isn't directly stated/could be of varying importance such as WE, LSAT score (?), undergrad GPA and other GPAs.

I assume the firms get some kind of say in who they choose. And while there aren't a lot of URMs at T14s, there are still more than 90 which I think historically has been the number of slots, so someone has to get rejected. WE, GPA, Undergrad prestiege... anything could go into it.

Plus if you pick, for example, Chicago and DC which have ~20/25 slots between the two, with Chicago having like 4 max, then your chances are smaller than picking NYC and DC.
