Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
Midnight, I too have had this attraction to engineers and computer science majors throughout UG. I really only see myself marrying someone with some sort of college degree. I would never marry a doctor (hate the hours), but I would marry a dentist. I would marry someone with a degree in business as well. Definitely not interested in marrying a lawyer though. I'm hoping to end up in NY OR DC ultimately, and I'm open to interracial dating, so I don't think my options will be limited.

That's so common in the DC area. I know several men from there who do/have done this.AAJD2B wrote:Downlow - Men who sex men but claim to be straight and sex/date/marry women.midnight_circus wrote:What is this?AAJD2B wrote: If you do end up in DC, be careful of the DLing that goes down. Exactly I think you hit the nail on the head. I think I just need to reevaluate who I can see myself with long term.okaygo wrote:You just need a strong women. I don't know what you're used to dating, but you need to just up your standards.ThePiedPiper wrote:Oh no not at all. I am in no way arrogant. However, I am proud of where I came from and how hard I had to work to put myself in this position. I just have always had in the back of my mind what if the relationship doesn't workout, will she take the kids, will she find me being a lawyer intimidating. etc...AAJD2B wrote:Uhm, what? This makes no sense, bro.ThePiedPiper wrote:I actually don't want to get married at all. I don't want someone to feel threatened by my status or prestige as a lawyer. Plus if by some chance my work schedule impedes or gets in the way of having a loving healthy relationship I don't want my wife getting a divorce and taking my kids. For a while I thought about just adopting since I grew up in the foster care system or in vitro.
There are women who are committed and understanding of sacrifices made to get ahead. Besides this work schedule thing is within your control once you've gain some years of experience. I hope you won't be one of those black males that wear their degree on their sleeves and act as if you're God's gift to women.

Okaygo, there's no way to prepare for the GTown interview, just relax and remember to articulate your opinions to the best of your ability.

I'd recommend black/grey/navy/khaki dress pants or black/grey/navy skirt, knee-length. No stockings required, nice flats or heels (even open toe is acceptable). Boots are debatable.okaygo wrote:Hey since everyone's on...does anyone have any advice for my GULC interview tomorrow?! It's a group interview with the dean. Also. What do I wear? What is 'business casual'?
For the shirt, a blouse or nice sweater in any color. I tend to avoid the shells that I would normally wear under a jacket because they're usually short sleeved/sleeveless and so too casual without the jacket (which I think are usually too formal for business casual). Good luck at the interview!

Seriously? That's ridiculous.applelover wrote:That's so common in the DC area. I know several men from there who do/have done this.AAJD2B wrote: Downlow - Men who sex men but claim to be straight and sex/date/marry women.

Okay. But what do I wear! I don't know business casual in women's clothes.applelover wrote:Okaygo, there's no way to prepare for the GTown interview, just relax and remember to articulate your opinions to the best of your ability.

Nice top with blazer?
Suit?

Whoops I missed the business casual part or your question. I didn't actually wear business casual, I wore business professional, and I saw people there wearing both. If you do decide to wear business casual, slacks and a nice shirt and flats should be fine.okaygo wrote:Okay. But what do I wear! Yeah I have no desire for a lawyer or a black male doctor (I dated one that was in med school and he thought he was the holy grail of all men. Needless to say, he wasnt.)
I do want to make sure I find a guy with at least a 4-year degree with an entreprenurial spirit. I'm open to interracial but I dont think other races are attracted to me because I've never been approached.

I used to think the same thing, but then I told myself maybe they're not as forward as black men or are intimidated by me (it's just what I told myself to feel better).mandyjay11 wrote:applelover wrote:Midnight, I too have had this attraction to engineers and computer science majors throughout UG. I have a thing for Italians, but there isn't a large Italian population in the city I attend school in. Nor is there a strong black middle class, but that's another issue for another time.

On a related note, I am not looking forward to the boring attire that we will have to wear at law firms and to interviews.

Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
I've had white guys tell me that they don't approach black women because they assume that black women are only going to be interested in black guys and they don't want to get rejected. But I've also found that it depends a lot on where you are. At home in the midwest, white men literally never approach me. At the area around my UG, when I roll out to a bar of coffee shop with a book to read/study, only white men approach me--and I've heard from friends out there that it's because I didn't "look like" I'd be interested in black guys. The stereotypes involved with all of this are crazy.applelover wrote:I used to think the same thing, but then I told myself maybe they're not as forward as black men or are intimidated by me (it's just what I told myself to feel better).mandyjay11 wrote:applelover wrote:Midnight, I too have had this attraction to engineers and computer science majors throughout UG. The best solution? You approach the guys you're interested in instead of waiting. Gets the job done.

True life. I have an extensive sundress collection which is going to rot in my closet for the rest of forever. :/

+1 Because I love wearing fitted hats and I have a tie to go with each fitted hat I have. Time to abandon personal style I guess.mandyjay11 wrote:On a related note, I am not looking forward to the boring attire that we will have to wear at law firms and to interviews.
