Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
The last part about the Pi resumes seem to somewhat echo LC's comment about a pre-LS resume. Did you hear of tailored activities on resumes that were pre-LS? With that, would the ACLU be more likely to take someone like yourself vs a standard HYS grad?narwhalsrfun wrote:Hey everyone, thought I would chime in. I interned for the ACLU during the school year and worked full time summers in legal dept over the summer on an immigrants rights project for several years. We had the head lawyers hailing from NYU, Penn, Georgetown, and BC, and interns from YLS, CLS, GULC, UCI, and Penn. I think its hard to get impact litigation straight out of law school but I think getting it is more about demonstrated public service than prestige after a certain point. Anywhere in the T14 would have opened the door for an 1L interview or a permanent attorney spot, but the PI resumes cinched positions.

Sidebar: A member of a scholarship committee at a school viewed my LinkedIn. Not a surprise, but still surprised to see that they actually do background checks.
ETA: OK alert #2. I'll post details in the group site if anyone is interested.

For a real life example, we are currently hiring at my job for a fellow straight out of law school. Narrowed to six finalists. Only three are from the top 10 schools. None from HYS. The rest are from schools ranging from Loyola to WashU (can't remember the third). The no pile has at least one Harvard grad that I found.DiniMae wrote:The last part about the Pi resumes seem to somewhat echo LC's comment about a pre-LS resume. All finalists had pre law and throughout LS experience that indicated sustained interest in what we did. A few had letters from people whose opinions we know and trust. Their letters of recommendation indicated that interest as well.
I would emphasize, it's not just about public service commitment, but specialization as well.

I think that this kind of info is great to hear because (1) it breaks "TLS wisdom" and (2) non-T3/6/10/14 students have doors open to them.Skool wrote:For a real life example, we are currently hiring at my job for a fellow straight out of law school. I can say at my fedgov D/A, there are a lot of T20 grads. That could be because I'm in DC at HQ with appointees so maybe they select alums to be their deputy/advisors/special assistants/etc. But let me say at other D/A HQs, I meet lawyers from all over the ranking scale in jobs with a "JD Advantage" (not attorneys). These are usually policy/legislative advisors/etc.
Anyone else have some insight? BTW, I looked up the NFL & NBA GC (HLS) and MLB GC (UVA). However, the assistants come from a few places (ex: Nussbaum [MLB] is Notre Dame '04).

Added a new option on the spreadsheet for a withdraw. Also added the formatting.

We only have one legal fellow here (at a fairly well known international development organization) and she's from William and Mary

Anyone have any insight into Berkeley's scholarship matching program?
Specifically wondering how likely they are to match $$$ from Michigan and if they take COL and/or tuition differences into account with their matching offers.
was blessed with a generous offer, but I'm not sure the location will work for me =/

In that case -- try it! I think they said something about a demonstrated interest. I think.
