I did end up writing the essay for scholarship consideration at Penn over the weekend so at least I was semi-productive.

At what point should I give up on NYU? I've been Ur1 since 1/2 and I've seen people apply later with comparable stats get accepted (I know that diesnt mean much). Anyway, I only really care because of the ASPIRE scholarship & now I see in the Applicants thread that NYU is inviting others to apply 6 weeks after the "deadline." At what point am I "out" for NYU scholarships? They all require interviews in March, but I assume they ask who they want with several weeks' notice right?

Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
I was actually a little confused about whether or not it was an invitation to apply. The writer just kind of mentions the existence of the program without encouraging action steps (unless I've missed something).
I'll PM you a copy of the message from the Aspire Professor for you to judge for your self. I thought the deadline to apply had passed.
I don't know about being rattled by this though. Spivey's thread recently had some discussion of sending LOCI before you've been rejected/waitlisted. Might be an idea worth reading up on. Also, making a visit to NYU might be helpful, if you're from the area.
But also, nothing is over until its over. Until you hear of folks actually being interviewed, I think you're still in it. To date, I don't know that we've heard of folks even being invited.
Edit: Spoken by someone still holding out for an RTK interview.

Hi Skool! Didn't realize it was you! (Reading from my phone on the go.) Thanks for the PM! I'm trying to narrow my "wait list" to schools that I actually care about. For example, I'm ok with Duke's lack of response. But it would be nice to be one of the recipients for the NYU scholarship just for the mentoring, but I wouldn't go to NYU without it. But thanks again; I'm sure if you received it then others did too. I may have "missed the boat."Skool wrote:I was actually a little confused about whether or not it was an invitation to apply. Edit: Good luck with RTK! And you're right about patience, but with so many ASWs I'm really trying to plan my March/April so I want to narrow it down. NYU is a wildcard for me like SLS or HLS just because of this program. Maybe I will write a LOCI. Thanks

Can I completely chnage subjects? What are your ideas of "unicorn" jobs? Maybe not ones that you personally want, but realistic things post-JD within ~3ish years. I keep hearing that these uni jobs are reasons to choose X school over Y, but what are they? And are any of them worth the debt incurred over other options? Just curious on your thoughts.

Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
I've always thought of unicorn jobs being non-legal (but generally JD advantage or at least HYS advantage) things OR legal things that are incredibly rare to get right out of law school. International human rights work can be unicorn, for example. Entertainment law is another example.DiniMae wrote:Can I completely chnage subjects? What are your ideas of "unicorn" jobs? I don't think these kinds of goals are worth a ton of additional debt (unless maybe your unicorn job is like starting a non profit or something that's going to let you LRAP your way to victory) but idk it also depends on how good someone's network is. Generally the unicorn goals fit into people's pre-LS careers so it's better to ask current unicorns or older unicorn mentors because I imagine the value add of HYS could change depending on which unicorn job you're targeting, which school you're consideri ng and at what cost, and how averse you are to generic outcomes from law school.

Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
Thanks LC and CC. So essentially it's these types of positions? I don't necessarily agree with all of the selections, but I'm interested in everyone's thoughts. Anyone care to rank or call out a few that they think are tops?
IOs (UN, ICC, IJC, WB, etc.)
HR related NGOs (Amnesty International, HRW, IJM for Christians, etc.)
Sports/Movies (In-house with any league or team, HBO, NBC, the major studios)
Intl/NS Government work (CIA, DoD, State, WH, etc.)
Elite/prestigious litigation boutiques (Keker, Bartlit, Kellogg, Susman)
Desirable government positions (e.g., AUSA)
Legal academia (and associated fellowships, e.g., Bigelow, Climenko)
Elite/prestigious PI positions (e.g., Skadden Fellowship, impact litigation with the ACLU)
SCOTUS Clerkship, Bristow Fellowship (though these are one year positions)
Very selective biglaw firms (Irell, Munger, Wachtell, Williams & Connolly)
Tenured academics
ACLU, The Southern Poverty Law Center, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund

Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
You know, there's often a lot of talk about PI unicorn jobs and the advantages of HYS. Personally, I'm hesitant to put them in the unicorn category (maybe it's because I've met some of these people and they look and talk like all the other PI lawyers I've ever met).cc78 wrote:^^^ add in ACLU, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund...
The thing is, I always think of unicorn jobs as being mythological--- everybody has heard of them, but who has really ever seen somebody practicing in that field. For instance, sports law, entertainment law, water law, space law (lol), etc. Basically, the kind of stuff that not so great law schools use to try and differentiate themselves from competitors and attract naive students. I feel like the PI jobs are of a different kind. They're certainly scarce and like everything else in legal hiring, there is a tendency to favor HYS.
Still, its a lot of common wisdom about HYS getting these jobs more than others. I believe that, but I would be interested to see the data on just how likely they are to beat out CCNMVPDN. My PI office is staffed by attorneys from Georgetown to Harvard.
At the end of the day, resources are scarce and we're careful who we invest in. (We've been burned by plenty of incompetent Harvard interns before). Pedigree is hardly sufficient (and super-HYS pedigree is probably not necessary), you still have to deliver and I don't know if there are enough people at Harvard who are specialized enough to work for us (or the Racial Justice Project at the ACLU or the Capital Unit at EJI) AND capable of doing the work. Thus, I would think other law schools have a fighting chance too.
All of this is to say, you probably don't NEED to go to HYS to get "unicorn" PI jobs, although it won't hurt. Desire for mere access to these jobs shouldn't control anyone's decision.
