You can either me nominated by a member school or be accepted outright, you DO NOT have to attend a member school to participate in the CLEO Summer Institute. I am not attending a member school and will be going this summer.

Ok so, what if I was nominated by a member school and that's how I got accepted. But I don't choose to go to the school that nominated me.

Did this school offer you a conditional acceptance based on your CLEO performance? This was true in my case when I attended the summer program but I chose to attend another law school. It wasn't an issue for me. To the best of my knowledge, you're not obligated to attend the school that nominated you.

No, I have already been accepted to the school. I just got the impression that the school nominating got me accepted to Cleo so I was wondering what would happen if I chose not to attend that school.

I would advise you to check with the school that nominated you because I am obligated to attend the school that nominated me.

I imagine it wouldn't be an issue but Kimmie said something that may suggests otherwise. I would ask Ms. Williams (or the admission officer at the school) if you have any concerns but I can't imagine it being an issue. I can only speak from my experience but unlike you I had a conditional acceptance that was based on my CLEO performance.

Nothing really stands out for me because the overall experience for me was very positive. My classmates were all great and we all bonded pretty close as a group. Having positive people can make a difference in your overall experience with the program. I guess having lunch with the local judge at the court house was the highlight for me. I imagine you'll be doing the same at CLEO.

Schools that either interviewed or were scheduled with us included Iowa, Kansas, Pittsburgh, Utah, Wisconsin, Maine, and Illinois. There was a few others but I can't remember them all but there was roughly a total of maybe ten to twelve schools that interviewed us.

IMAPCA... I gotta tell you.. YOU ARE AWESOME!! Please encourage some of your classmates from CLEO to visit this forum and chat with us. Your comments have provided great points of clarification.. now I'm excited about CLEO. You say that your experience was for the most part a positive one and that one of the Highlights was eating lunch with the Judge.. could you tell us what your most negative experience was during CLEO?

Thanks for the help. One more question: what is the difference between sustaining institutions, support institutions, and member schools?

You're quite welcome! I'll see if I can contact some of them to visit the forum although I imagine that they're quite busy these days preparing for final exams. I forgot to add one other positive experience.....being invited to the faculty members' homes for get togethers. It was nice to fellowship and get to know the professors on a personal level.

The most negative part of CLEO? Personally, I honestly can't pinpoint anything that was negative. Maybe the food, perhaps? They fed us well at the dining hall but the food was usually fried or just unappealing. It was difficult to eat right while trying to maintain a decent body weight. But working out did help to keep off the extra pounds. And it was a bit cliques at times but that's to be expected. It's the same way in law school. It's like high school all over again!

Hello everyone,

I sent in my deposit yesterday so hopefully I will know which site I am at soon! On another note, in regards to the nomination and having to attend the school: my letter of acceptance to CLEO specifically stated that I would have to attend the school that nominated me. So, if your acceptance letter did not say that it is probably okay to attend another school.

I am new to the forum and have read the entire discussion. I applied to CLEO back in February and everytime I call them I do not get a response, I am just transferred to a voicemail and never receive a call back. I have also sent emails with no reply. Has anyone else had the same situation? Does anyone know if there are even still any available seats?

I haven't had any trouble as I have reached Mrs. Williams directly every time I've called (maybe 2-3 times).

IMAPCA - I noticed there is a career fair and a professionaly seminar. Have you been able to reap any benefits from the career fair? Or do you know someone who has secure summer internships through the CLEO network? If so, how easy or difficult was it to do that and what were the nature of the internships (mid/big law, clerkships, etc). Thanks for all the help.

I finally received a reply to my email asking that I remain patient so I guess I will do that. I am just hoping for the best at this point. How long did it take others to hear back?

Hey, Sports.

Yes, that career fair is taking place this summer. This is my first time going to the event. From what I understand, it's basically for professional development but employers are expected to be there as far as I know. Personally, I have not been in CLEO long enough to have benefited from the CLEO network as it pertains to jobs. I'm sure there are others but I don't know them well. I think the job fair is more geared towards current 2L and 3L students.

From what I heard, they have some strong, reputable corporations as well as some good law firms being represented in the past.

IMAPCA.. could you estimate about how much of your own money you spent during the program. Now that I have the opportunity to ask a CLEO Scholar questions.. im dry. I'll try to think of some more. What courses did you take while a CLEO? was there an opportunity for you to actually do anything moot or mock court related such as practicing and analyzing opening/closing arguments, objections, entering evidence, and examining the witness? Thats all I got right now..

If you are attending CLEO at a school you applied to, does that mean you will pretty much get automatic acceptance into that school? For instance does attending CLEO at Missouri mean that I will pretty much gain admission into their law class this fall?

Hi, Excellence. I didn't have to spend much since room and board was already covered. Thus, I only had to pay for incidentals such as hygiene products, snacks, laundry, entertainment (movies, etc), and dry cleaning. I probably spent at most $200, if that.

The courses we took included Torts, Contracts, Property, and Legal Writing. Legal Writing will most likely be the most practical thing you will practice because you need to learn how to craft a legal memo. We didn't have any opportunities to do moot court but that doesn't mean they may not do it for your site. But with all that you will be doing, I think they may want to devote more time to you learning the substantive law and to write memos since that's the core of what CLEO represents (to prepare you for law school).

I can't speak for what Missouri might do but a number of my colleagues who applied to the hosting school I attended were offered admissions at the completion of CLEO (probably close to 100% since everyone I knew who applied got in). That's the advantage of CLEO (for me at least) because the professors actually get to see your efforts and see beyond your LSAT/GPA. I imagine they had some input in the decision to offer a seat to those who they felt were promising. To the best of my knowledge, everyone from my program had a law school to go to by the time they graduated.

I think the same was true with the previous year CLEO students from 2008 (based on the CLEO 2008 postings). Everyone who came without a school had a school in the end.

Missouri is a very good school. It has a very strong reputation in the Midwest. I actually know a few students and graduates from there. They are very sharp individuals.

It was a simple graduation ceremony where everyone got a certificate of completion. The hosting dean spoke as well as one of the graduates who I believe was selected by the TAs. It was very formal and the entire faculty who taught and the office staff were in attendance. I can't say this is the norm but they didn't recognize anyone who was top 10% or top graduate or anything like that. I thought that was a good thing because in reality everyone worked hard and earned the recognition as graduates. Just to make the 80 cut among hundreds of people applying to the program is a HUGE honor. I know I felt honored because I honestly felt I didn't deserve it over those who may had better credential!

There were no special tokens issued but they (actually the TAs) did, in a humorous way, recognized some students who were characteristically unforgetable or stood out in terms of something that's associated with them while in the program. Kinda like high school where you had "most likely to succeed", "most likely to be a Supreme Court justice", "best dressed", "most congenial", etc. It was all for laughs and most of them were fitting! I think they even did the same for some of the faculty too!

I forgot to mention that you will also have access to TAs who are also current law students. We had two for our hosting site. They were very cool, helpful, friendly, and instrumental to our success. They were available for us if we needed assistance on assignments.
