As Paul Mooney put it, "if your hair is relaxed, white people will relax." You'll get much further with straightened hair than natural. Sucks, but that's how it is.

I beg to differ. For some firms and clients it can and does matter but certainly not for all. I'd rather not be employed by or work for any client that would discriminate me and judge my potential on the basis of how I wear my crown.

As black people we first have to adjust to the culture of firm life but now we must also be stripped of the choice in how we wear our hair? Nah son. I'm good. I'm too blessed to be stressed by that type of nonsense, especially in THIS day and age.

i totally think that it depends on the firm. all but one of my aa-female biglaw buddies straighten their hair and the one that doesn't switches between a natural style pulled back in a tight bun or small micro braids. however, they all agree that it depends on firm culture.

I used to work downtown D.C. and I have long curly hair, that I rarely straightened with a flat iron. (unless It got to cold to wear out) The basic style that I wore was a bun, it was easy to do and protected my hair from the elements plus it looked professional. I've worn my hair in up-dos and half up and half down. Natural hair is very versatile. Play with your hair.

I have a good friend who attends a very conservative law school and she has beautiful locs.

HTH!

my hair is natural...there is nothing that can't be tamed and put in line if you have a blowdryer and a flat iron
