Question for you all, for URMs who have interviewed at Columbia, what have been the results so far?

From what I've seen so far, a few of us have been admitted sans interview in what seems to be a greater frequency than Non-URMs

Yeah, I did not interview and it seems most (all?) of us in this thread who were admitted did not. Which kind of surprises me.

I think our struggle is that it is so hard to make complete rhyme or reason out of this stuff. Comparing oshkosh and Tr3, for instance, kinda raises some confusion:

They have pretty similar numbers and are both MA. Tr got UCLA, while osh was WL; osh got Berkeley straight admit while Tr had to go through FR.

Going further, I find my cycle to be pretty strange. In the lower T14+ I'm killing it with $$$ all around, but once I wandered into the DMB range, I got no love, but then was back on fire for Penn, NCC and S. Why would that gap be there? It would make more sense for a sort of cascading of scholarship money the further up the rankings you go, but not this WL/Twist in the wind thing.

And then there's the crime committed against LC at UVA, WTF was that?

I can *possibly* shed some light on this. Went to a UVA dinner recently, and one of the addcom people were saying that they haven't admitted a ton of people with great numbers and that they realise that those people are offended/confused by that. They said they're looking for people who show a commitment to buying into the UVA community hype. So if LC is from California, and hasn't shown she wants to stay in the area or be very involved in that aspect of things then that could be part of the reason?

I didn't apply to UVA so I don't know much about them. Are they one of the schools where it's ideal to tailor your app to them? Like Penn, Duke, etc?

In at NYU! Also, gold saved me from an even bigger emotional rollercoaster by pm'ing that I needed to add the "L" in front of my username in order to access the ASW. The URM support in this thread is beyond epic.

Also in at NYU this morning! Very, very stoked. Submitted 12/31 (kind of clutched the RTK essay), UR1 1/6 and UR2 1/23. Now we just wait for that call. Congrats to everyone else who heard back good news today! Woooot.

I did just hear from NYU. I'm an RTK finalist and am going to NYC next month to interview...this would be one thing that would keep me out of Palo Alto...

Congrats to all. Said this before and will say it again re: UVA (and Michigan): they are not in positions to accept each and every qualified out of state candidate, even though we all know LC is probably among the most qualified candidates they've received applications from. As a result, I think you see weirder denials from both because they have in-state considerations to make.

This whole process is both frightening and fascinating. But that's why it makes so much sense to cast a wide net and blanket the T14 if possible, I guess. And UCLA, UT, Vandy, and WUSTL if one can afford it. Truly never know what's going to happen.

Congrats! I just got in the other day. Are you thinking of going to school in the Chicago area? You had Chi too the other day right?

Off topic but interesting---> I was in an interview yesterday, we were sitting waiting on another interviewer to join us. Other interviewer walks in (she's a middle age white woman), she sits down answers her phone then asked to be excused because she needs to chat with the other recruiter. Totally normal, Im not concerned at all BUT when she leaves the room she bends down to PICK UP HER HANDBAG, apparently it was open on the floor all along. They leave chit chat or whatever and then return..... Old lady puts her purse back down. I try not to take things personally but I was a little offended

Good news- I have another interview tomorrow so it's good prep for my SEO interview on Friday

Among her many... eccentricities, Aretha Franklin is famous for never taking her eye off of her purse, no matter how fancy the establishment. Even when she sings at the Garden or Carnegie Hall, some peon comes out and puts her purse under her piano so she can keep an eye on it the entire show.

I think with things like that, people get the benefit of the doubt until they, through more overt action, prove they don't deserve it.

I also think it's risky to internalize/negatively interpret too much of what people say and do as commenting negatively on you. I would think doing so is going to make law school not a fun time.

UVA does YP/like to feel like the prettiest girl at the dance, yes. They're definitely not as bad about it as Penn though. Penn's really in a league of its own when it comes to YP. Gonna write the crap out of my "Why Penn" because it's one of my top choices.

Ahhhh ok. I wrote a serious Why Penn & got in so I get it. I didn't know UVA was among that crowd. Hmph

Yeah, I'm not too upset, but I do like Vandy. This is one of the apps I messed up on, so I figured WL at best (but Berk didn't seem to mind the error in the end).

Now this, I would say is YP. Sorry to hear that, though. I can't imagine that you wouldn't snag at least one from the trinity. Fingers crossed!

Thanks and congrats to you too!! Yes I did get Chicago the other day and still havent recovered. I absolutely want to go to school in Chicago. It's a big city but not as dizzying as NYC or sprawled out as LA. And I think the quality of life is just so great there. If I'm going to spend the next three years of my life in a book, might as well do it with a good view?

Only thing I'm slightly unsure about is placement into DC when compared to other non-YHS T14s.

I'm certain I'll end up in Chicago if not for YHS (I'd also consider Columbia, albeit a little bit hesitantly because of COL). But Northwestern today absolutely is a curve ball and I'll have to really weigh the two against each other to see which one is a better fit.

As Tr3 already said, this is classic YP. You're an AA male above both of those school's 75ths. Forget 'em. You've got MUCH bigger fish to fry.

I posted this in the SEO thread, but does anyone plan to apply to the Dallas or Newport Beach firms?

I've been out of contact due to a car crash so forgive me going back like four pages...

I would definitely apply to Dallas. I put Houston as 1 and I think California as 2...but given a chance I would prefer Dallas to CA.
