Can someone please explain to me what "queer" means? I've been wondering this for years. And why would queers take up a traditionally derogatory term as their identifier?

I don't identify with queer, but here's why for the derogatory term: it is only derogatory so long as you identify it as being such. However, utilizing it as a term of self-description in a positive light helps to remove negative stigma from the term. Queer is rarely used as an offensive word anymore, and can be attributed to the assimilation of the word by the queer community.

Edit: Queer can also be used as a radically political term, same with [homophobic language redacted]. It has also been used by people whose gender deviate from the norm (see: trans* and genderqueer). It is often used as an umbrella term (such as the title of this thread).
