Yea unfortunately the schools that have accepted me require parent info despite me being labeled independent by fafsa. My parents texted me "lol" when I asked for their info. They then called like "ummm are you serious??" I joined the military as a teen so I haven't been supported since.......FairchildFLT wrote:Agreed. I've never applied for NeedAccess, I've only done the FAFSA, so I have no idea.lc39 wrote:Right - but I'm saying that doesn't necessarily apply to NeedAccess (a separate form that is required by many schools in addition to the FAFSA).FairchildFLT wrote:Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but I have never had to put my parents information into FAFSA.

Re: URM 2014-2015 Cycle Thread
I took a scroll through some school applicant threads and saw how many people are waiting to hear or are held at schools that I've been accepted to. I felt guilty because some of them I know I absolutely won't attend (super safeties). I think I'll have good kharma if I start sending my withdrawal emails, right? Anyone started sending in their emails?cc78 wrote:I'm going to go ahead and withdraw from Michigan and Duke, because they obviously aren't in any hurry to even give me a decision (I've been complete since September 4th with both).

Um, yeah, NeedAccess is just total *lol* parent info from both parents for clearly independent people? I haven't even spoken to my father in 25 years...should I go track him down now?
C'mon NYU and Columbia...(these are the two I can think of right now who do this)

Yes, there are legions of hopeful waiters out there. But, I think it's a balance of choosing when to withdraw. I think if you've been admitted and have your aid offer and know you're not going, it's ethical to withdraw to open the seat to someone on the WL who will attend if admitted. Those WL folks should have ample time to get their lives in order in advance of school starting.DiniMae wrote:I took a scroll through some school applicant threads and saw how many people are waiting to hear or are held at schools that I've been accepted to. I think it's perfectly defensible to wait for aid from any school you're admitted to. Big time named scholarships sometimes come as a surprise and I can imagine getting a Ruby changes preference schemes pretty significantly. Also, you never know when you'll need to negotiate scholarships.
There's the other category of defensible withdrawal...the stop screwing with me withdrawal. After I sent Duke and Michigan my withdrawal emails they replied wanting to know what law school I would be attending. Hm, maybe I'll let them know when I get around to it. Sorry, I'm bitter.

Yea it's very weird to me because my parents have zero interest in contributing beyond a flight home for the holidays. Lol.cc78 wrote:Um, yeah, NeedAccess is just total *lol* parent info from both parents for clearly independent people? I haven't even spoken to my father in 25 years...should I go track him down now?

So I have the first 2 years of tuition and fees paid for through the gi bill for every school except gulc. However, I was told that if I want any finaid for 3L then I have to apply now pre-1L. I'm assuming this is correct, which is why my parents may be involved. But if all schools don't require parental income if you're considered independent, then I'll wait and submit that info after more (potential) acceptances come in.

Because 2 of my 3 years are already paid for (with a housing stipend), potential scholarships from schools I have lukewarm feelings about aren't as relevant. I'm interested in IP, so I would gladly take out loans at Berkeley for 3L versus a free 3L at Cornell (just an EX, I didn't apply to Cornell).

RE: NeedAccess
I think *some* schools will waive your parent/s portion if you email them and explain the situation (but from what I gather, this is rarely approved). Also *some* schools only require you to do needaccess one time.
I'm also pretty sure that any public school will only require FAFSA, which doesn't require parent income.

Is there room for scholarship info for the spreadsheet (Sheet 2)? Or would people feel that makes you too identifiable?

We could make that happen, but don't want to do anything without mass approval.jemthey17 wrote:Is there room for scholarship info for the spreadsheet (Sheet 2)? Or would people feel that makes you too identifiable?

Sadly on the anonymity front, I think if anyone is truthful with their numbers and maybe one other element in their background, an adcom is going to be able to figure out who we are. There just aren't that many URMs with the kind of numbers of folks in these parts.
That being said, I'm all for adding scholarship info.

a) Need to see all scholly offers before I make a decision, and currently I only have one.
b) Typically schools won't pull off the WL until spring (April at the earliest?) anyway so it really doesn't help people who are already WL if I withdraw before that.
I personally am not concerned with being identified because I post a lot on these forums and I'm sure any adcom who cares to read TLS can figure out who I am (and it doesn't seem to have hurt my cycle any). However, I intend to keep scholly offers private until I finish negotiating. I don't know if that's unnecessary paranoia considering how open I've been about other things but money will be a big factor for me this cycle and I'd like to withhold that info from adcoms if I can. I don't want them to see that X peer/lower ranked school lowballed me and offer something less than they otherwise would have, or see that Y higher ranked school gave me a big scholarship and not give me anything because they figure I'd rather go there.jemthey17 wrote:Is there room for scholarship info for the spreadsheet (Sheet 2)? That said, I don't see any harm in adding that as something people can share in the spreadsheet. People can always choose not to share if they don't want to.

I really should have applied earlier. Submitted mid-Jan and am so anxious to receive just one decision. Worried that I'm going to spend this weekend drunk dialing all the schools on my list

I used to feel the same way. I think schools are really experienced and careful about judging borderline candiates early in the cycle against borderline candidates later in the cycle. Auto-admits are auto-admits.gold33 wrote:I really should have applied earlier. Submitted mid-Jan and am so anxious to receive just one decision. I wouldn't worry too much. I think the old early bird gets the worm thing might be a bit dated in these latter days.
